Fabia VRS speaker upgrade

Featured Replies

Hello,

Just purchased my first fabia vrs 04 plate.

Car is fantastic, my only gripe is the stereo and standard fit speakers are really pants.

Im after some advice on upgrading the speakers??.

Any ideas recommendations would be great.

Im not looking to transform my fabia into a 1000 watt bass bin, just some really good quality upgrades.

I dont want to start cutting larger holes, moving speakers etc.., just a straight sawp really.

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

The speakers actually aren't that bad mate, the problem is the head unit. You'll notice a significant increase in sound quality by changing the head unit first for a better quality one. I'd try that before replacing the speakers, the main problem with changing speakers is that there isn't a lot of room and if you don't want to increase the space using baffles it's going to significantly reduce your options as far as speakers go.

I changed my headunit for a Kenwood one and the increase in sound quality was very noticable.

That's probably the amplifier protecting the speakers from damage. A lot of home stereo units do this as well.

Totally agree with replacing the HU first. I replaced mine two weeks ago with a Pioneer unit (relatively cheap) and the difference is incredible. I'm sure you could get better speakers, but the factory HU really doesn't do the factory speakers justice, as my head unit now puts out decent bass through the door speakers that doesn't distort and yet actually vibrates my wing mirrors! If you want to improve the sound then DEFINITELY change he HU first. Then you can decide if it still isn't what you want and upgrade speakers from there. I think I'm going to go for a small sub box next, as I'm not really into a LOT of bass, but I think it'll fill out the sound nicely. Let us know how you get on.

Also agreed.

I found it to be crap. Replaced the headunit with a pioneer item and got a lot of improvment.

I've now externally amped the standard speakers to 30wrms with an infinity basslink and they sound great, just as good as the 75wrms infinities I had in my Corsa. Theyve held out about 12 months now too, and I dont have the stereo that quiet.

I have decided on firstly upgrading the door speakers.

Im going for a pair of Focal Access 6.5" (excellent reviews)

Plus an external amp to power them

I agree with the head unit issue, but im reluctant to change it as i like to keep my cars as standard as possible.

Im sure there are lots of head units that would look nice in the fabia though.

Is the head unit in the fabia taken from other VAG cars??, or was it designed for the fabia?

Thanks to everyones advice its much appreciated.

arnt the fabia front speakers shallow mount things?

if you peek on the car audio security site .. there is a company called DLS audio, they do some good powered shallow mounted 6.5 and tweets for about 16o if i remember correctly lol

ive been pre peeking ready for a upgrade in the mrs fabby vrs

I too was reluctant to change the head unit as I also like the look of the factory deck in the car as obviously nothing will match as well (unless you want to go for a Becker unit which seem to have that factory look though are quite expensive) and I really didn't like the look of many of the aftermarket stereos with their fancy lights/displays and sticky-out buttons.

The only thing is I'm not sure upgrading speakers alone will accomplish what you want because I assume if the standard speakers sound so much better with a new aftermarket HU, it suggests the HU is the weak link and assumedly if you change the spearkers the factory HU will still be sending a low quality sound signal to your new high quality speakers? But I'm happy to be proven wrong (though it might be a placebo effect). Let us know how it turns out.

Well in the end i got a replacement speaker supplied and fitted from my skoda dealer for £100.

It now sounds great, im more than happy and glad i didn't splash out on an upgrade with amps, head unit etc..:D

£100  for a standard speaker. Holy crap. Still, aslong as you are happy!
