RAW and Jpegs

Featured Replies

Tried shooting in RAW yesterday, well I selected RAW & Jpeg option. Well I put the stuff on the PC today and there was files numbers eg IMG_500.jpg with a IMG_500 (1).jpg beside it, but no RAW file (.CR2). I would have expected a list of .jpg and a list of .cr2 of the same photos. Am I missing something?

Just to make sure the camera would shoot in RAW, I put it in RAW only and indeed it is giving .cr2 files.

until you said the latter, i was going to ask what setting you were shooting in, as the camera only shoots in RAW in "artistic" mode (TV, AV, M, ADep, etc) and will shoot in Jpeg in all other modes.

What camera do you have?

I have a Canon 40 D.

Also I have just started using the Canon Digital Photo Professional software and noticed that I'm making big corrections with the Sharpness in it. A friend did mention before about a picture I took and that it didn't look clear, maybe this might explain it.

I have had 20d, 30d & 5d which are older generation cameras and they all did CR2 & JPG when selected to do both.

Not sure about the 40d. You will be able to tell which one is RAW in DPP as you get adjust the photo in the RAW tab where as the jpg you can only adjust in the RGB tab.

I hope that makes sense.

It does make sense but it was actually when I went into the DPP software I realised it wouldn't allow me edited any file in the RAW tab .

I do the same (shoot RAW & JPEG) not sure why really lol. I get a list with the JPEG and then the NEF next to it

I think I have figured out whats wrong. If I shoot RAW & Jpeg together then copy and paste images to the PC they all are associated with .jpg, but IF I transfer them using the EOS Utility it transfers them as .jpg & .cr2 files.

If I shoot RAW only then copy and paste images direct from the memory card they have a .cr2 extension.

Seems like a flaw that you HAVE to use the EOS Utility.

This isn't what happens with my 350D. Sounds like you have a weird file association setup on your PC.

Yea but surely if the PC recognises .cr2 on their own it should recognise both .jpg & .cr2 seperately. The actual file naming changes aswell

Strange

Are you able to get screenshots of what happens? I can't fathom at the moment how it manages to do what you're describing :)

Steve

It's to do with how you get the photos onto the computer I think. If you're having this problem I'm assuming you are using a USB cable via the camera. If you use a card reader instead then it should work fine, even without needing to use the Canon software.

It's not ideal, but it should 'fix' it. I think it's a Windows issue rather than a camera one.

Unfortunately I deleted the ones I had and the camera is gone for Focus repair. Heres bascially what I would have when I looked at the memory card.

With camera set with Jpeg & Raw

IMG_1500 (1).jpg

IMG_1501.jpg

IMG_1501 (2).jpg

I had assumed that the (1), (2), (3) was referring to the no. of RAW images taken as it was the first time I used this function. All files were identical sizes

Must try this when I get the camera back, its gone for repair due to focusing issues.

I had something similar happen to my PC. At first it was obvious as the RAW file didn’t have a thumbnail, then after several updates (Vista) it produced one. It didn’t make it obvious which was the jpeg and which the RAW. The jpeg was always stored first however and natural the file size is way different. Here is an example, not sure if you can read the file name on them.

I'm on XP, maybe an old updates version ;) I'll have to look again when I get the camera back. Hopefully it'll be better, although I have approx a month to wait :(
