Post-chip insurance

Featured Replies

For those of you who have had their engines tuned, I was wondering what effect it had on your insurance? Was there a huge increase? Did anyone's insurers refuse to insure the car post-modifications?

Mine were fine, slapped me with an additional premium though :(

I looked into this a while back and was quoted an extra

I think you'll find that the extra premium charged for your wheels relates to the increased chance of a 'theft' claim rather than any objective measure of performance enhancement. I've no doubt you put the wheelz on because they look good, so they'll look good to others too. What a nasty world we live in! ;)

I didn't think of the tea-leaf (thief) possibilities. I guess I'm too complacent living where I do. Dad's left his car keys "safely" in the ignition overnight so many times, I can't recall them all. Perhaps I should have told Tesco that I got locking wheel nuts too? hmm. I guess the car would look more attractive to thieves, but I've never had a run-in with car-crime... yet. I may try to bullsh*t a little on the renewal phone call to try and make sure my annual premium isn't too high. I already tell them I do 10,000 miles p.a, when I suppose 15,000 is nearer the figure (I did have every intention of doing 10,000, honest)

you obviously live in a nice part of the world, you are very lucky, I only get to go to these 'nice places' for holidays. Long may the 'open doors' and 'keys in the ignition' reign in such wonderful parts of the world (UK). But obviuosly your insurer factors in the nastier parts of the world.

Looking forward to my holiday in North Devon later this year.....

There's also the possibility of (on fully comp) damaging your

wheels then claiming it on the insurance. I seem to recall previous

enquiries with Direct Line indicated that if the total value of the

alloys was less than 200 quid they didn't have to be declared.

I think the crime level of your area is reflected in your premium

though! :D

Be careful over understating your annual mileage, especially if you have had your car from new. If you have to make an insurance claim in the future be aware that part of the appraisal process is to photograph the odometer and chassis number for presentation to your insurer, try explaining the additional mileage then!, they could possible refuse your claim due to inaccurate info when purchasing insurance!!!!!!!!!!

My insurer refused to insure me if i remaped vRS. Told them it would be 38bhp increase. so looking for alturnative insurer at present. By the way current insurer is eagle star.

I have just spoken to my Insurance Co., What Car (0845 7413554).

I asked "What If" I upped the power by 20% as a result of a remap ? After much discussion with the Underwriters they came back with a figure of 10% extra on the annual premium.

Pretty Good when I am paying

spc - I consider myself very lucky to live where I do. North Devon's nice as a holiday place - You heading for Westward Ho? That tends to be where many of the tourists flock to in the Summer. I hope that Tesco's extra premium isn't related to me claming for damage to the wheels. The excess is

Devon...

Turns out we will be about 15(ish) miles from there, a little place called Stoke (near Hartland) We are hoping it's just a little bit off the main track. I promise not to distrub the peace and quiet of the local people.

Hey do you think I should claim an insurance reduction for the time I'm in your 'nice' part of the world!!!!
