Sat nav question

Featured Replies

A friend of mine has a sat nav (don't know the make but know it's not a Tomtom) and it tells him how fast he's going and also tells him how fast he has been. I'm thinking of buying a Tomtom or something similar soon and wondered did anyone on here know if the Tomtom's have this feature.

I have a Tom Tom 730 and in the bottom right corner it does tell me how fast I'm going.

So this combined with the speed camera database means I get audible warnings if the system thinks I'm going over the speed limit and there are cameras ahead.

My TomTom Go 720 does have a GPS speed display.

It's about 5 mph different to the car speedo though (i.e. the speedo says I'm doing 75 but the sat-nav says 70).

You have to remember to change it from mph to kph when you go abroad though

I really wanted a satnav with the feature that shows you how fast you had been. I've been thinking of going to Germany to see how fast the car would go and how accurate the speedo was. I was just hoping that Tomtom's had this feature in a menu somewhere.

Also how quickly does it take the Tomtom to calculate a route? I borrowed on of the 1st Tomtom's the other day and it took ages to calculate. My mates sat nav (which I'm pretty sure now was a Garmin) is really quick as he uses it for delivering chinese's.

The garmin sat navs tend to have a gps feature which shows things like average, max speed etc.

A friend has a Garmin that does log your maximum speed.

I don't think any TomTom has done this though obviously it will show your current speed as you drive

i have garmin nuvi 360t it has a speedo screen with analog speedo and saved top speed, overall average journey speed, moving average speed direction of travel and odometer with camera warnings and live travel updates

its a very good unit and its the only sat nav ive found that works with the apple mac for updates online and custom poi and hands free bluetooth

Is he a mid-wife? :)

If you are going to Germany to make use of the speed-limit-free sections of autobahnen (which are getting fewer every year) can I suggest that you try out the Nurburgring toll road (ex race track).

It is in fabulous countryside, isn't too far from the channel ports, (250 miles), has top quality, cheap B&Bs nearby, and most importantly it is far better than slipstreaming a Trabant towing a caravan in the outside lane of the E52.

I'm sure I've seen an add on app for Tom Tom that gives you average speed etc. A bit of googling should find it.

I have a Garmin street pilot C550t and it gives you all this to, enough stats for anyone to be happy with.

It is also really fast to get a gps lock. It beats my friend's Tom Tom's on almost every hardware feature (hands free calling, gps speed, TMF receiver) but I must say the Tom Tom interface is far better than the Garmin.

Event Logger - OpenTom

I might download it and have a play. It sounds very complicated though!
