clock problem

Check for loose connectors, loose fuses and loose or damaged wires.

What exactly cuts out?

Does the LCD clock cut out?

More info needed but check:

the two brown ground wires (A24,A9)

the yellow/red wire (A30)

the black/purple wire (A1)

the red/purple wire (A23)

fuses (10,11,15)

Pull out fuse number 15 and you'll probably find it works. Only drawback is you will lose lights on warning buzzer and both clock and trip meter will go back to zero every time you switch car off. Needles on car will not drop back down when car off. I've been running mine for about a year like this and apart from being a wee bit annoying it's no big deal.

Mines a 99 SLX Tdi and the value of it means its not worth replacing theclocks.

I was hoping you were going to say the LCD clock cuts out too. I've heard of couple of cases as loskie described - that's why I asked.

Still worth checking the connections as described, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope. With the ignition on check for loose wires. You will lose the fuel guage is you find a bad wire.

Bad news is that removing Fuse 15 doesn't usually work. You may have to replace the instrument cluster.

Only the rev counter and speedo were cutting out prior to removal now its as I described above. I do have a functioning speedo and rev counter all by removing fuse 15. Has worked like this for a year now and must have worked for others as I initially found the info here.

Has worked every time for me.

Fix I belive is to do with voltage supply in chip in the dash and dash needs to go to a repair specialist.

If I had my own to look at with such a problem, I'd play and swap out chips etc. However as I'm not an ECU specialist I woudn't do it for anyone else - suggest searching up those that repair clocks.

Greg.

I had a similar problem with intermitent failure of the dash clocks -Speedo, rev counter, fuel and temp guages on my Mk1 Oct TDi. I ended up using BBA Reman in January - the web link referred to above. It was repaired and back within 3 days and it solved the problem. I found the service quick and no nonsense. It was a lot cheaper than a new dash and having to get that programmed.

I have understood from other threads that it is a simple case of a dry joint in the circuitry but knowing which one is the key!

D.
