Suppose if I told you the limiter is going to be raised soon to somewhere around 5500rpm, you wouldn't be happy? ;) That might mean 0-60 can be done in 2nd gear.

Me thinks I can manage that in my car :)

Look....I'll try mine next week....what is the supposed max speed in third at the red line then?

Should be practically bang on 90mph.

Mine bounces too easily off the limiter (around 5100rpm) because it's tuned to keep power on hard into the redline. :)

Revving to 4700 only? :P Not good enough :D

Yeah, I know, and that was a mistake.

I had meant to hit only 4500rpm, as this was the ballpark figure I'd been quoting people when I told them that my car liked to rev.

Most thought me crazy and/or a liar when I said the rev needle didn't slow significantly twixt 3500 and 4500rpm in the first three gears.

If I'd have claimed any figure higher than 4500rpm, they'd have no doubt flamed me with Cyber Napalm and sprayed me with gallons of Troll-B-Gone! :(

And anyway, I'd have thought you of all people would have known that all diesel engines tend to spontaneously explode, drink two gallons of fuel per second and suck negative vacuum energy from sub-space at even 1 rpm over 4500?

Your crazy and irresponsible rpms are likely threatening the existence of the universe itself, dontchaknow?

Or, at least that's what I've been led to believe. ;)

Do it, man, do it!

Only, careful with the universe. :)

I thought everyone knew there is no point in going anywhere near the redline in a diesel.

If they didn't before, they do now. :P

Anyway, I'd go for a test drive in another vRS, as it does look quite swift.

Will try mine...

Cool.

Look forward to hearing how you got on.

Eek!

Potentially, that could make for the fastest Fabia 0-60 ever.

If mankind is still about to record and revel in it, of course. :(

Mine will rev as far as 5,000RPM in 3rd (not tried other gears) but as soon as it hits 5k you can feel the power fall off, and changing into 4th feels gutless as most of the torque is lower down the rev range.

Mine is remapped by the way, but i still think anything over 3,500 is a waste as your hitting the next gear to high up the revs to make use of the low down power, and for me it made the car feel slower.

OK, so here's one especially for the Mongreller (again performed with a full tank and full stomach), lest my manliness ever be called into question again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xmy87rmHN6U

It wasn't, you say?

And anyway, I was never confused.

And if I was, you'd better believe I was young and needed the money. :o

yup - that's the limiter. It can be raised. ;)

That video left me in shock! I have never seen a speedo climb that fast:eek:.

I have never actually pressed the accelerator right down on my vRS, now I may just have to:).

"You know when you've been Wobblytickled" you say. Well I know it after seeing that.

Mine is remapped, and if i take it to 4500 in 3rd, when i shift into 4th i get a really nice 'boost' as the turbo is already at max pressure and the engine almost seems to 'snatch' the next gear and continues to pull really hard (plus at those revs, you are covering the cheeky tw*t in the Merc behind you in lovely smoke)

It may 'feel' quicker short shifting and driving between 2000 and 3500 rpm, but believe me it isn't. Although it's a diesel, you still make a lot more pace by ragging the a*se off it! Especially if it's remapped. After all, the whole point in getting a remap is to get more boost and more fuel at higher revs.

I've watched the 3rd gear video many times now and with my trusty stop watch, i have the lap times (500rpm intervals) as the engine climbs up the revs. They are as follows (seconds):

1500-2000 - 1.3

2000-2500 - 1.2

2500-3000 - 1.2

3000-3500 - 1.5

3500-4000 - 1.6

4000-4500 - 2.0

Make of this what you will, but the needle definately slows past 3500, and especially after 4000.

Still very respectable for a standard motor!

Many thanks for the stats.

I'm not going to quibble with the figures at all.

Just two things I'd like to point out though.

1. Although the revs start to slow between 3500 and 4000rpm, it's only by a titchy 0.1 of a second and this more than supports my case for not changing up any sooner.

2. Between 4000 and 4500rpm the slowing is more pronounced (as one might expect), but, in all seriousness, I think I may have been actually backing off a bit as I was trying to hit only 4500rpm, while keeping a lookout for stray deer on my private road.

So, when are you going to post the '2 rev limit & beyond...' stats?

There was definitely no backing off there. ;)

I totally agree that driving higher up the rev range will gain you more pace.

Driving lower down just eats the clutch anyway.

If I want to make tracks I usually change up at around 4.2k

Same here.

Unless i've got some yuppy in a merc or beemer behind me who feels that he should be in front due to his higher 'cast' of vehicle, then i take it to 4500 to get the extra smoke.

Mine never smokes?

Any ideas?

I thought that mine didn't smoke, but after a long journey there is some fine dust on the tailgate that when wiped with a tissue looks like diesel particulate, but it is only slight. Also, the exhaust pipe gets a bit dull inside after 200 or so miles (after it has been cleaned with Autosol).

When other Fabia vRS's overtake me and they are pasing, they do seem to emit a slight smoke. A clean air filter and PD160 go a long way towards economy and exhaust emission cleanliness though.

Let me clarify...

I also get some soot splatter around the inside of the car's exhaust (which wipes off easily), but I've never noticed it on the tailgate.

The smoke I'm talking about is the Batmobile-esque plumes of particulate that some vRSes apparently eject over their vanquished quarry.

And how come you're getting passed by other vRSes so much? :)

Yet to happen to me. ;)

I believe mine smokes because:

a) it's remapped

B) i've had the EGR turned down, so less exhaust gas is being recycled back into the combustion chambers

Before i tampered with my car, i only ever noticed smoke on a very cold morning where this was most probably steam from condensation in the exhaust.

Sounds fair enough.
