Squeaky Sound Starting from Cold

Featured Replies

Hi there,

New Skoda owner. Just bought the car last week. The car is fantasitc other than the problem.

The problem is that when starting the engine from cold, a sort of high pitched squeaky noise coming from the engine for 1 second. The car drives fine, no other noises when driving. Engine starts every time. It goes away after the car has warmed up.

Friend of mine has a theory that the starter motor might need some oiling. Mine is a 1.4 petrol fabia comfort (AC) 100bhp 2000 87K on the clock.

Anyone has any idea? Many thanks.

A belt slipping?

A new Cambelt has just been changed.

A new Cambelt has just been changed.

lol wouldn't be your cam belt slipping mate, they're toothed and you'd be in a world of hurt if it slipped.

Would be another one, alternator/fan belt?

Which belt drives the A/C pump?

My Octavia had a noisy starter motor bearing, could be that or the alternator belt?

If its the starter then mine was like it (most of the time) for the 2 - 3 years i owned it, never got any worse.

Yeah friend of mine told me that as well. He says nothing wrong with the starter motor, if you change a new one it will do the same after a couple of months. In the long run, will it do any more damage to the engine?

As i say mine was like it for well over 2 years, whats the worse that can happen? bearing fails (but it would of got louder first as it was 'only' a noisy bearing) then the gear fails to mesh on the flywheel, so wont turn the engine over.

IMO it was a 'risk' worth taking.

Same here!.. it's like an "ERRRRRRRRE" buzzy squeal.. was my starter... had that car two years and it did it every so often.. Mechanic said it was fine and no need to change till it finally packed up.. it never did while I owned it and hopefully never will!

87k - sounds like a drive belt slipping somewhere - they dont last for ever -

i`d try the simple things first

since when is a starter motor not simple?

hi norman -

listened to your link and yes - sounds like the starter motor - bendix drive is fkd - but if the chat means a really high pitched squeally noise i`d still go for a belt which is alot cheaper -
