Does a MAF change require VAGCOM?

Featured Replies

My Octavia has started to misbehave. I suspect the MAF which seems to be the default for all engine related problems. An example of the symptoms; I stopped to let a family cross a zebra crossing and the engine was revving to 3500RPM and back to idle as if I was impatiently blipping the throttle. I wasn't touching it and was hugely embarrased. I'm quite capable of swapping the part, but is that all that is required, or does it need hooking up to VAGCOM for calibration etc.?

Just swap it over there is no need for vag-com

Does it still do it or was it a one off.

If it does happen regulary, then disconnecct the MAF to see if the symtoms dissapear.

Hi!

When my car had such symptoms it was the temprature-sensor that was faulty. It is a 5 min DIY-job changing it - when the engine is cold.

This fault will leave a fault-code you can find with VAG-COM. I think a MAF-fault will not leave a fault-code.

MAF also leaves fault code if the circuit is broken, the error is "MAF sensor - Intermittent signal" or so.

Also the ASR light will come on

You could be correct, if it does misbehave, it tends to be when the car is warming up. It's fine stone cold and fully hot, but the in-between stage, when the temp needle is just lifting off the bottom stop and warm air is beginning to emerge from the vents is the time to worry.

Thank you

Hi!

I did not notice the fault before the temprature-sensor was totally shot. Then the engine went to approx 4000 rpm - and stayed there! It was the ECU thinking the engine was cold - and engaged the "choke".

But it was easy to fix - once diagnosed. The garage even recommended me changing the sensor myself, and told me where to find it and how to do it.
