Leather restoring

Featured Replies

The gear knob gaiter is getting a bit dry and looking a bit tired, whats a good product to use on it? Don't really want to use a cream type product as I'm guessing it'll get in the perforations and look a mess.

Something which can be used on the steering wheel would be bonus too.

Thanks :)

I find Meguiars Gold Class Rich Leather is a good product. It's a cream but I've used it successfully on perforated leather by rubbing a small amount between my hands and then rubbing it into the leather. If you take your time and work in small amounts it stops the holes from filling up.

Gliptone products seem to go down well on DW but it is a cream. I use it every month on my leather seats and its great. Conditions the leather really well and you get the added bonus of it actually smelling like new leather

Thanks for the replies, I'll take a look into those products.

Only problem is I haven't done anything to them in nearly 2 years :o hopefully all that will be needed is a conditioning cream. I've read stories that cleaning creams can take off the finish of leather...

For cleaning the steering wheel back to is original matt, supple patina, use a JML magic eraser, works wonders!!!

JML magic eraser is a very mild abrasive.

I use the Zym0l leather cleaning spray (orange) and then put a small amount of the autoglym leather care cream on a MF and rub it into the area.

Works a treat on the gear knob, the handbrake lever and other leather trim items in the car and doesn't leave white or messy deposits that I've seen.

Just let it sit there for a bit then wipe it back with a dry section of the MF to remove any surface residue.

I'm glad someone else doesn't get on with the AG leather cleaner... :P

Again, thanks all!

I'll take a look in the local halfords store and see what they stock - might give the AG conditioner a try since it'll easy be to get hold off.

However about to have a look into gliptone - whoever they may be... :)

The gliptone is supposed to be good.

If you're going to use the AG conditioner then make sure you used a cleaner first.

I use Gliptone, it's way better than the AG stuff.

I disagree the AG cleaner might not be great, but the conditioner is good.

:+1:

The conditioner is fantastic stuff.

I'm sure the cleaner is good as well, I just can't get the damn stuff to work :mad::mad:

For closure....

I ignored all of your advise, :P and bought some Simoniz leather cleaner and conditioner as recommended by Autocar.

Its a cream, which I didn't want, but it works very well. No residue is left behind if applied carefully and after a couple of treatments the leather is no longer dry and tired looking. Just what I wanted and less than a fiver a bottle. It left the steering wheel a little sticky, but this soon disappeared as the product was absorbed into the leather or my hands...
