Drum to disc swap

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a in my house a full set of front 312 brakes with new hubs and calliper carriers ...but now i fear that i will leave my rear axel underbraked.

Can I make a conversion from drum to disc brakes, preferably the 256mm ones?Which parts do I need(except the pads and discs)?

yes, it can be done but you need he stub axles, hubs/bearings, and brake pipes and hoses etc..

tbh fittings 312 isn't going to unbalance your braking, drums are a lot better than most people think

Rather than changing the drums to discs, why not just see if you can get better performing shoes for the rear drums?

As above, with the note that under hard braking the rears are doing burger all anyway; the dynamic weight distribution of an Octy in an emergency stop is about 90% front, 10% rear.

Where can i find performance drums? ATE doesn't make any...

There's no such animal as "performance drums". All you'll get is uprated friction material for brake shoes.

i've seen drums with slots milled into them in a similar fashion to grooved discs,

Not sure why. Overheating is not really a problem on the rear due to high front:rear balance and this may increase wear/reduce performance.

Agreed, and if you compare depth and area of friction material on a typical road car disc pad with that on a drum shoe, the shoe has less depth and way more area, which suggests to me that the depth wear rate on the drum is lower (even if the mass wear rate is the same, and I think it's lower too), which would mean that the rate of gas evolution is lower...

get some minifins on there!

I thought Minifins were for drum brake Minis on 10" rims?
