Locking wheel nuts

Featured Replies

I've lost the key for the Skoda locking wheel nuts. Is there some kind of identifying code on the nuts that will tell a dealer which key is required? I've booked it in at a dealer but he sounded a bit unsure and I rather not pay dealer labour rates if all he wants to do is take a hammer and chisel to them...

Do NOT let them chisel the bolts off. I am not aware of a key number given, even when the cars are new. What we do where I work is have a full set of Skoda locking wheel nuts supplied as part of the workshop tool kit, and when one is required for a retail customer, I sit down with both sets and go through them until one of them fits. It has a number stamped on it and then I look up the part number on ETKA and add the additional code and order it from Skoda. The part normally takes between 1-2 working days and cost about £13-14inc vat. It also comes with a new wheel bolt that matches.

Kind regards

If it's £14 for just the key, why bother? A new set of lockbolts with key is only £20.

But you've still got to remove the old bolts, hence the first post. Tenesmus is trying to avoid damage to the original locking wheel nuts and replacing them. My post says don't chisel the old bolts off and the dealer should not be unsure about how to order a new bolt to key number.

However read below and there maybe a problem as I don't know how old the car is.

On a different tangent slightly. I had reason to email VW tools today as we have a brand new Roomster in the showroom minus a locking wheel nut key. They kindly sent me 6 photos of the different sets of locking wheel nuts that are fitted to the VW range of vehicles. The Roomster ones fitted to the car did not appear in the photos. And another thing. All mid 07 models onwards have had a change of wheel nut design and the three models we have in the showroom, Roomster Fabia and Octavia all have different styles of locking wheel nuts!

Let us know how you got on Tenemus.

I agree totally abut how a dealer should get the old set off. All I was saying was that unless you're dead handy for said dealer, it might be quicker and cheaper overall to get them to whang on a brand new set of nuts, rather than order just the key.

So you mean remove the old bolts with their key and fit a complete new set. Chances are they will still have to order them and then charge you for fitting them rather than just buying a key from the parts dept.

That's a good point - I'll probably do that if they have them in stock as the dealer is a bit of a drive away following the collapse of the Bristol franchise (which was carp anyway).

Sounds a bit fishy to me.:)

Are you suggesting that this will still require 2 trips to the dealer, one to identify the correct key for the existing set, and another to fit the new ones? If so, then I'm afraid you are talking MBF for once.

Go and buy the correct set of MacGuards, go to dealer with them ask them to remove your old ones and fit them?
