CV gatter split but....

Featured Replies

When driving my car today I could feel a very very faint knock on the accelerator and brake pedals, it was that faint I was sure 100% sure there was anything to feel, anyway looked around the drivers side wheel and found the CV gatter had split, told the mechanic who's doing it what I felt and he said thats nothing to do with the CV joint and prob something else. Is he pulling a fast one, the way I see it is if the CV joint is as bone dry as it looked it would be metal to metal and not surprising something could be felt, anyone else had this or agree? Cheers

Agree it's the CV Joint and yes had to replace numerous times on various cars over the years.

Word of advice, don't bother filling with grease and putting a new gaitor on as the damage will already be done. New joint or drive shaft is required.

I think he's telling you ther truth, the knock is probably brake pads moving about.

As for the CV joint it'll be one of those it might be ok with some grease in it and a new boot, you'll know cos it will clack on full lock if it's shot after replacing the boot.

What side is it?

One is pretty easy to do, the other is an ****.

Id go for a boot first, much cheaper option.

Its the drivers side, with my luck your gonna tell me thats the difficult one aern't you!

Yep, drivers side is the tricky one.

I should check the brakes pads are still OK. When the gaiter split on my old Citreon the grease got on the brakes and made for some interesting braking on the motorway. I ended up on the hard shoulder as I basically had no braking from the drivers side.

Hi Lummox any chance you can tell me - i have done an outer cv boot on my superb, on the passenger side and managed to do it by undoing the 2 btm ball joints, then the hub nut and wiggle the cv joint past the bub assembly towards the rear of the car. What is different on the drivers side to make it so much more difficult, i`m only asking cos the drivers side boot is looking a bit "tired" and i`d rather do it now than wait for it to split just before i go on holiday or some other bad time !! thanks in advance, mickyg.
