Brakes and MOT's

Featured Replies

Had mine MOT'd last month, no problems except got an advisory notice saying "Front and Rear Brakes heaverly Worn", oki i thought i'll sort them soon.

Had what i think is the Brake pad light come on on the dash (Orange circle with to semi circle eitherside?)

Just taken all 4 wheels off to have alook and decied if i'll get the hub carrier and upgrade to the larger size and found all 4 set of pads with at least 5mm left on each (front and back with no tapering) the disks do have wear but nota hugh amount:mad:, anyone know what warrents that sort of notice from an MOT? cause they look fine to me and still stop the car fine be it not as good as my old VRS.

If you have the 288/312mm discs the new depth is 25mm total and the worn depth is 23mm.

If you can see enough of a lip at the top that you have 1mm gone on each disc face the discs are worn.

maybe they've measured the discs width and they are close to minimum... not sure why you've got brake warning light... fluid low? Or the warning wire is set too high when they made the pad?

oops replied too slow... sorry for duplicate post!

Thats useful info, going to check my rears now that I have a figure to work by... think I'm way under 23mm though :(

Do check those figures, but they were what i was given for new discs by my dealer and the disc spec sheet online too from various suppliers.

So 2mm worth of wear is the limit?

Youv'e had the benefit of been able to remove the wheels to carry out an inspection, this is something that the tester is not allowed to do. As the pad wear light has come on within a month of the test suggests to me that his comment was justified.

I found that the pad wear indicator is very pessimistic as mine came on with loads of material left - just a trick to get you to buy new pads early maybe. Mind you better that way round than over optimistic.
