Belt or chain on 2.0 TDI CR?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've been trying to ask google and search, but couldn't find an answer to my question:

Does the 125kW/170bhp 2.0 litre diesel with Common Rail (used at least on new Octavia's and Superb's) use cam chain or cam belt?

Thanks for help if somebody has the answer.

Thanks, that was a quick answer

How do you know it? No offense, but I would like to get some arguments for it before I trust you :)

Its a belt. Take the inspection cover off and have a look!!!

I guess they don't put chains on the diesels as they are a little noisier as a rule.

See if there's a cambelt change within the service schedule, that should give you a clue!

BMW use chains on their diesels.

The belt is used because it's a touch quieter and cheaper for the manufacturer.

The CR170 is a belt as I've seen the cambelt cover off on one at a dealers as I was asking questions and they had a mechanic looking over one they had in to get familiar.

Ok, I think I have to trust you guys

Thanks!

Doesn't always follow! Had a Primera 1.8 that had cambelt change in the service schedule. Played hell with the mechanic for not changing it - he took off the oil cap and showed me the chain :o:O:O

Seems they had the same schedule for all models and basically missed off the "if it has one" from the schedule:(

I still dont know why Nissan only used a belt on the Primers diesel the petrol was very quiet with the chain,

I had to find out the hard way when mine went a few years ago £1200 for the repair but managed to get it for half price as it had already been changed and had only done 30k on the replacement.

I think if we all contacted Skoda direct and missed out the Uk customer service centre with the request for a chain to be used, do you think it would work????

My Primera diesel was probally the quitest diesel i ever owned and the most reliable.

My 1 series is a chain and the engine is slightly quieter than my previous Octys. Not a lot though. Still it saves on the servicing.

EDITED as I made a typo:(:o

Any London cabbie who still has the fairway and the TX1 will testify to that.

The 2.5 or 4 ??engine was used in them and they where cog driven most are still working with over 500,000 miles on them, and they swear that this could be the best and most reliable engine ever made

Don't you mean it has a chain?? :P

The 2.0 dervs used in the BMW's are chain driven are they not. They certainly were, with the newest Mini Cooper D being the only exception to the rule of Chains on BMWs.

I'd be amazed if yours was belt driven just because the dealers all told me chain and so did the service book I was looking at. Chain inspection from 100k IIRC.

Sorry sorry guys, it was a typo, I did mean chain,:o:O:O that’s why the servicing is cheaper. Soooorrrryyy, I was watching the telly at the time I typed it and I think I was distracted by a nice looking chap with a big chainsaw.

  • 1 year later...

My Honda 2.2 Diesel has a chain belt and is the quietest diesel I have driven
