Forgotten password on an Asus eeepc 901

Featured Replies

Just got this email from a friend:

"I am on my way to Africa with an Asus eeepc 901 (linux) with the password set and... I've forgotten it!

Can you see if you can find an answer / contact number for tech support UK - looks like I may be lugging a brick round Africa for two weeks ! Any suggestions apreciated!"

He tells me he has tried all his normal user passwords to log in. Any suggestions as to what he can do?

Cheers,

Matt

not a lot unfortunatly, he may even end up having to do a system recovery which needs the recovery disc and a USB DVD drive.

Not on the eee presuming he's running linux and hasn't fiddled with the partitions. Short guide from a usually very reliable wiki:

When you see the BIOS splash screen press and hold the F9 key (or tap it furiously as if you're killing aliens). After a few seconds you see a menu with boot options. Select “Restore Factory Settings” and press enter. It will format the user partition thus restoring the system to its original state.

All data will be lost, of course. But there might be a way round this (although trickier). Either:

Eee PC: forgotten password recovery (Xandros) (simple!)

Rescue Mode or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Learned to Love Single-User Mode [EeeUser Eee PC Wiki] (a little more complicated)

If your friend runs XP though, I'm afraid mannyo's right.

no no no. xp, surely you could boot to dos using a usb, floppy or something then copy the sam file fromand use another pc and something like cain & able to hack the password?

oxid.it - Cain & Abel

and how to get the sam etc

All about SAM

just a thought, he could send you the sam, you could crack and send the pass back ;-)

Is running Linux, and I doubt he has fiddle too much with it - normally the fiddling of this computers is done by me and I did not even know he has an eeepc. I have suggested that he tries the F9 route....

Thanks all - I'll report back when I know how he is progressing.
