Ever considered trading in your Skud?

Featured Replies

Well take a tip from someone who has done it.

Give your decision some serious and careful consideration before you do so. To trade up for a more powerful car can perhaps be seen as a step up, a step forward.

But to go and trade Otka or one of her sisters for a TDi. Being away from BSF for a few months at least gave me a chance to familiarise myself with the L&K 110 TDi Octavia that I traded Otka for (I have already spent the 30 pieces of silver so don't ask).

To recap for those who don't know or for the one of you who cares (come on own up, who cares?) I was in Silbury in late February having a new clutch fitted under warranty (how did that happen?) when I set eyes upon a pre registered L&K TDi. And very nice it was too. In a moment of madness I decided that Otka would go in part ex. Well why not, I had my six months of fun with her and she needed new tyres.

So a new L&K was ordered and I am now the sad owner of a diesel. My heart drops to my shoes every time I see a fantastic, low, aggressive vRS on the roads.

So, does the full beige leather interior, heated seats, xenon headlights with powerwashers, electric sunroof, centre armrest and other little toys make up for the loss of the 180bhp motor, fantastic brakes, handling and grip?

Well, no not really. No matter how much I look at the mpg meter showing an average of 54.1mpg over 2600+ miles I simply cannot feel the sap rising.

That little thrill I always loved as I walked to the car, taking in the lowered aggresive styling and 17" alloys is gone.

Still there are some other benefits. My insurance has dropped

I guess the only way I'd trade up is if a fat wad of cash suddenly fell into my lap - the kind that would let me pay off my mortgage and still have enough left over to buy an M3. Or maybe if they did a vRS 4x4... Hmmm....

Although I'm still in the wide-grin stage of ownership (five days now :D ) I don't particularly object against my 4x4 hatch not being overly RS'ish. It's low enough, the front and rear spoilers are not really my thing (well, maybe the front one is) and the 210hp, low-down torque and 4WD give a thrilling driving experience.

Still running it in but still managed to upset some Beemers and Seats today, their drivers in a hurry to pass me, only to be shocked when they saw the black beast disappear into the distance. What was that? Then, when I had hit my self-imposed rev limit and backed off, they closed up to stay a couple of lengths behind/to the side of me - my God, it is a Skoda - before showing me (on a straight of course) that they really, really do have a fast car, honest to God.

Now, should I really take off the 4x4 turbo badge? Even my dealer suggested I do so! He even offered a 1.6i badge for a replacement

The guy's a hooligan :D

BTW, the wife also loves the new wheels. So there you have it...

It sounds to me like a pure dose of " chip needed syndrome".

Sure your diesel doesnt have that rigid feel to it leaving you able to get out and walk upright without pain, but do a chip mod or something and you could have about 130/150 hp and so much torque your Octa would only dream about, and belive me there is nothing like showing off your torque abilities to the heathen disbelivers behind you.

You could well have something that could be described as a " sheep in wolfs clothing", so enjoy safe in the knowledge that its also less likely to be coveted by the "take without asking brigade".

Cheers

Lucky ,

Very sorry to hear your sad story , but I'm not surprised , I never saw you as a diesel man - visions of you showing off your traction control in the car park , broken sump on the moors - you didn't come across as a person in dire need of a diesel .

But to go from something that flatters my poor driving due to its excellent road manners to something that simply refuses to corner due to the the soggy suspension supporting a half tonne of scrap metal posing as an engine beneath the dark metallic bonnet is a difficult transition to live with.
Think that just about says it all , diesels are sensible and economical , so what , who wants to be sensible all their life !

You wouldn't be the first person to go back to the vRS ( isn't that right Steve ? )

Lucky, i remember that sinking feeling and im only to

pleased i had the chance to get my RS back.

You could always do as Kentish said and tune it, diesel's have

never been more popular or if the feelings run that deep maybe

it would be best if you just out it.

Hope you work it out

Steve

Ps Mellow' s right!

Id rather own a car that can make me smile/feel naughty

than one that could save me a few quid.

there ain,t anything on earth that would lure my 4x4 from my sweaty little hands. after 8 months it still gets my full attention when i climb in especially with only 6 days to go for a re-chip:D

100% smiles per miles:p

ect

Ive been tempted by (so far) a MG ZS 180 4 door , a MINI cooper S , an R reg EVO 5, a Y reg Impreza WRX, a new beetle cabrio (but its just too girly dammit!) a TT quattro.....ect ect ect , but ive still got my vRS , so I guess that says something!
