My personal rattle-hell (passenger door card)

Featured Replies

Cheers from Finland! Newby at this forum, so far thanks for great tips! Unfortunately none of them were "THE" solution to my existing problem...

My Scout is equipped with Sound System. During the bass tones (vol. 13-14 with CD) the passenger door's mid-speaker starts to rattle. I'm not sure if it's the speaker itself or the door card rattling against the door itself. The noisy rattle can be easily damped by gently pressing the door card around the mid-speaker grill. When the door is open, such rattle doesn't occur.

Well... As my Scout has still one year left of it's warranty, I naturally took it to service to get the problem solved. It's been there twice so far, with no results. The rattilng remains. Last time they claimed that the speaker was changed, well... obviously it was not. Finally I removed the door card by myself to solve the problem. At first attempt, two clips and small part of the door card (into which the clip is attached) were lost. I explored the door card as well as the metallic frame of the door. Several traces of chafing was found from the metallic frame. I thought the problem was solved. I attached several pieces of foam plastic into the door card to damp the rattle. I mounted the door card and ran a test: the rattle was still there! Today, during the second door card removal, I decided to remove the speaker itself. As the speaker was removed, I found another possible reason for rattling: the socket between the door card and speaker wasn't installed properly. Small ring-shaped foam (possibly to dump the possible rattle) between the socket and door card (into which the speaker is mounted) was partly inside the socket, touching the speaker membrane. I fixed this glitch and remounted the door card. But... The rattle was still there!! Annoying, loud rattle in certain tones, beginning from vol 13-14...

What to do next?

Oops... My story is almost a novel. I hope someone has the patience to read it through and give some advice. Or at least someone with similiar problem to share the desperation!

PS. During the second door card removal no clips were lost! I'm beginning to be an expert! ;) Thanks for good tips from here...

Hi,

a question: how to successfully remove clips?

I perceive noises from center dash, rather than from passenger door card...

Hi,

a question: how to successfully remove clips?

Well... I'm not sure if my way is the only one, but it goes like this. After removing the five torx-screws, I gently start rising the card from the lower end, where the two visible screws existed. When I manage to get my fingers under the card, I start from the b-pillar side by gently tugging the card. By increasing the force, the clip has time to settle itself for removal. Finally, it detaches quite easily, one at a time. I heated up the whole car to strenghten the plastics, simply by using HI in air conditioning. To get my fingers properly under the card, I used parking disc to rise it...

I have the same problem. Skoda change for me one speaker (Bass) but I still have this problem.

I use cycle tyre levers....

Hook the 'hook' end around the clip, and lever/pull/tug it until it pops out. I found that this reduced the amount of clips i broke :) You can use another of the levers by placing it against the door frame (just next to the clip) to get a better 'pull' from the lever you have hooked in.

I have to strip my passenger door down/again as i have a similar (very slight) rattle....

Hey, looks good!! Proper tool to get equal upliftig force around the clip. No damages on the paint finish? Well, most of the possible marks will stay covered by the card.

As cycle tyre levers are usually a soft touch plastic (to protect the rims) the door frame paintwork should be very safe.

i had exactly the same problem. on first visit to dealers they couldnt hear my rattle. Then i found a particular song and volume that highlighted to the rattle and they fixed it under warranty. took about an hr to do tho, just to reposition the speaker

Changed my Octavia for a Civic in July. You don't know what rattling is till you drive a Honda. Your blessed, Honest!!

Try the clip for the wiring on the electric window motor, i had the same problem and turned out to be rattling ever so slightly.

Cant be many things on the door card, as i was suprised to see everything was ferkin pop rivited together!

Now i've got VIBE SEK-60's 2 way components in the front doors and a Alpine Type R 12" battering the boot to bits when the need is there ;) LOL!

Yep, I had the same problem & it was this clip, just need to tie in down properly, there was an excellent video clip somewhere on here demonstrating exactly this - I'll try & find it.

The rattling is a common problem on the octavias with soundsystem.

A lot of german drivers have this problem too.

What the german dealers do, is they dampen the doorcards around the speakers. This will cure the rattling and will improve the sound by miles.

(dont have the soundsystem myself though).

Or just fasten it down with some gaffa tape? I just pressed on the clip a little and mines been ok since *touch wood*
