America-Pacific Coast Highway

Featured Replies

Ok, it's not exactly local, but if you find yourself in California, take the coastal route connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles. Big sweeping curves, well-surfaced roads, spectacular scenery (huge cliffs and wide views out to the Pacific)...plus lots of muscle cars and Harleys to drool over :)

Length is approx. 200 miles, but my favourite stretch was from Monterey/Carmel down to Big Sur...imagine the Corsica WRC except more ridiculously beautiful scenery, faster roads and slightly less chance of death.

I do agree with the route, the main problem is how to get the car over there.... And how much costs?

How fast can you go?

I am fortunate enough to have to go to Monterey every year for work (at the Laguna Seca Raceway) for an event we sponsor Clicky its a fantastic place & some great driving to be had in the surrounding area, Newport Beach is also pretty nice.

Picture is of Big Sur.

Best to go North to South as you get (slightly) better views, being on the sea side of the road.....

Merricans seem to think this road is a real chalenge (it has corners!!!) but really is not difficult and a lot easier than many roads I can think of in Derbyshire....

Love to go again sometime - really enjoyed visiting San Francisco, but not quite as keen on LA (but Hollywood/Beverley Hills was fun)

If you do go down Highway 1 make sure you have time to visit Randolf Hearst's pad at San Simeon blew my mind away!

This is absolutely on my must-do list. But if anyone's over there and wants to be blown away by scenery and doesn't mind going WAAAAAAY further, check out the i70 from Utah across the salt flats and mountains and through the Rockies to Denver. It goes from the 15 which connects LA with Vegas and then goes North through Utah, West across the length of the country but the elevations vary from 5000ft to well over 10000 in the Rockies. Then there's always Pikes Peak south of Denver. I drove all of that in a RWD 2.7 V6 Chrysler 300 and it was awesome! The view from the top of Pikes Peak is breathtaking (at over 14000ft), as is much of the 70. Well worth the trip!

Great road been on it 4 times now from monterey down to LA. First 3 time were the day after world superbike or moto GP races at Laguna Seca and to be honest it was a bit of a nightmare trying to keep out the the way of the bike. But on the forth time we stayed a extra day in monterey and had a much more relaxing drive down. Not really a road for high speed flat out boy racer driving its to long for that. Its more like set a nice pace and try to stick to it there are also lots of places to turn of and look at the view. My favourite part is a road sign which says twisty roads for 63 miles.
