AYM versus BDG 2.5 V6 Engine

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me the difference between these two engines in simple language please? I know a number of AYM engines have proved very unreliable but does this continue with the BDG engine. I think the BDG engine was used from 2004 and after.

John

BDG engine owner, 45k miles and 2.5 years so far, no trouble. Came with hard starting issue, I corrected it by setting the fuel pump timing on the edge of specification (which is tricky, we are talking half of one tooth belt adjustment between hard starting and correct operation)

Annoying changes compared to AYM: Suffocating pilot catalyst, undersized exhaust (e.g. the pipe actually gets thinner between output of pilot and input of main catalyst) , and a different turbo to AYM, so commercially available AYM pilot cat replacement pipe does not fit.

I guess these are annoying mostly for me, because they limit the performance and increase fuel consumption at 140mph+ :)

The engine uses minimal quantities of oil, about 3x less than my other 1.9TDI ASV.

The 6-speed manual gearbox also behaves nicely, no problems so far (touch wood).

Thank you Diesel V6 - interesting. Mine is 3yrs old with 26k on the clock. I just wondered whether the problems encountered with the AYM engine as described by Rotodiesel were also inherent in the BDG engine. probably so?

Once again thank you for your reply.

I think Roto hates the V6 in all it's guises.

It's horses for courses isn't it? Roto's use favours the 4-pot (and for the record, so does mine) but the V6 certainly has its uses - DieselV6's long distance, high speed drives are testimony to this.

As for faults I'm not sure, and DieselV6, can't you just use an aftermarket/custom cat bypass to improve the breathing?

I think you are right Bluefox - he doesn't seem to rate them much. But on a poll of the V6 TDI I carried out on this forum a few months ago everyone who had one loved them.

I really love mine and the sound from the engine is worth every penny lost in fuel consumption. As for the hesitating - you get used to it and allow for it.

Do you know of any specialist, preferably with skills  and with realistic prices, last time I asked H&S they wanted stlg500 for the downpipe alone, must have mistaken my Superb for a Porsche .

By comparison, AYM pilot cat replacement costs stlg120 or so.

All it takes is 2 flanges, 2in cone section, a bend and a straight section, the last 2 elements preferably formed together from a single tube.

I think Roto hates the V6 in all it's guises.

I'd agree with him, probably because we have both worked on our fair share of them over the years..lol.

Yes - I don't work on it I let the dealer do that. I just like the nice bit - driving it.

Diesel 6-pot better than sex?

Personally I prefer the sound of a '69 Shelby GT500, but then if SWMBO reads this I'll have to make do with the sound of a four pot TDI :P
