I'm just off J26 M1 and have confidence restored in my laptop with the new VCDS 8.5 cable, so if you need a scan feel free to pm me ;-)

For what you want Iain you will need a vag-com scan, rather than EOBD scan as the latter won't talk to the airbag module.
