Audi S4 S-Tronic v Manual

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have just put my deposit down for a new 2009 Audi S4 with the new 7 Speed S-Tronic 'box.

From reading all of the press material and from talking to my dealer, it is apparent that the auto' is slower 0-60 (5.3) than the manual (5.1).

This is because the auto' has to change into 3rd to hit 60, whereas the manual can hit 60 in 2nd.

My question is this: Even though the auto' is slower to 60 would it be quicker in-gear than the manual as its shift times are so quick?

Kind regards,

Matt

Hi and welcome Matt  you do realise this is Audi's poor relatives forum dont you :P :D

Hello and Welcome to Briskoda Matt. :D

I do hope that you know this is normally for Skodas? - The Audi S4 is a nice car... I wouldn't say no!

Hi Matt

And welcome to the poor cousin's forum :P

To try and answer your question, 'in-gear' times are usually done between two speeds in one gear, so shift speed won't be relevant. For example, the 50-70 time will usually be quoted for both 4th and 5th gear.

I'm a little surprised at the figures you report, as 'DSG' 60 runs are usually quicker or the same as the manual. Maybe it's related to them needing to limit torque on the DSG box for the S4? Just a guess...

Either way, on something like the S4 my choice would be for the DSG style box. More suits the character of the car I feel, to be able to select fully automatic when you fancy a cruise :)

Haha thanks for the warm welcome guys!

Yes I know this a Skoda spedific forum and not an Audi one, but I was a proud owner of a Furby vRs (and Briskoda) a few years back and knew I could get some spot-on answers here!

I guess with regards to the in gear times being in gear, I should rewrite my question.

The reason for the Auto being slower to 60 than the manual is because it has to change to 3rd to hit 60, whereas the manual can hit 60 in 2nd. Its becuase of the extra ratio on the auto and thus the gearing for the other 6 gears is shorter than the 6 speed manual.

So my question:

If the Auto is slower to 60 than the manual, would it be slower or quicker when going through all of the gears from say 30 to 100 mph?

Kind regards,

Matt

Quicker I'd say.

Nice car btw :D

I think quicker too. But when talking fractions of a second, its really not going to be noticable imho.

The DSG is an awesome bit of kit, superhuman gear change speeds and super smooth with it too.

If you really want a DSG, don't let 0.2s 0-60 put you off! :)

Its not the 0-60 that puts me off its whether or not the DSG suffers like this in gear when shifting through all of the gears when compared to the manual.

Kind regards,

Matt

It's such a good box! Go test drive a car with it :D

So you have driven one?

Quicker through the gears than a manual?

Matt
