An oldie but a goodie...

Featured Replies

I have just finished installing a JVC KD-BT11 in my 99 Octy, along with a couple of 6X9's on the parcel shelf. Now I know that certain people on the forum don't especially like the idea of 6X9's, but not having had rear speakers before I am enjoying the vastly improved sound! I did curse like a navvie as I cabled the speakers through to the back but got it done without too much hassle.

My problem is the HU, which seems to lose settings such as the fader setting, along with the fact that the tuner comes on with static although I do not lose any of the presets. Also, the unit does not function without the ignition key. Now before everyone starts shouting "Use the search facility on the forum for the answer!!" let me assure you that I have done this. I have read page upon page of useful information before I came to the decision to ask for your help.

Initially, I had just connected the ISO connectors as normal. Then, after reading the advice on here, I swaped over the red and yellow wires via the handy bullet connectors. I then disconnected the aerial wire (blue with white stripe) after reading more helpful advice. After doing all this, I am stuck with the above issues.

Are these issues just glitches with the JVC HU or have I b*llsed up the installation completely? Finally, is there any way of getting the unit to remember where it was on the CD, rather than starting to play from track 1 every time I start the car? Very annoying when you have alot of tracks on one CD!!

As usual, any help or pointers greatly appreciated.

I am not 100% sure, but you may need an aerial adaptor thing to get the tunerto work properly. If the octavia is anything like my Passat I had (of a similar age to yours), then it needed an adaptor and some messing about with a 'K' wire.

Maybe have a search around for that and see if anything makes sense.

Congrats on your stereo improvement btw. I've been into aftermarket stereos for 20 yrs and although I wouldn't have a set of 6x9's, they do make quite a difference to the average stereo.

Now you need to get yourself some amped front component speakers, and a sub woofer in the boot. Then you'll be on the slippery slope ;)

Im not an auto-elec so this could all be kack, but I know on my old JVC (el kameleon) unit I had installed, I had the same problem of losing presets, etc. when I changed cars. But it turned out to be the red permanent pos from the battery (to hold the memory) and the yellow pos from the ign (to power the HU) were the wrong way round (why do some cars have them one way and the rest have it the other?) as you stated tho, youve tried that.

The Octy II doesnt have a Ignition live , looking forward to messing with that...

My suggestion would be, if you can, to eliminate any shorts or wire faults by only connecting the bare minimum to get the stereo on (red, black & yellow), see if it works (swapping the red and yellow around as well) if it does, then slowly adding all the rest one circuit at a time until it goes wrong. You never know it could just be a simple short in a speaker wire or the tuner aerial causing the memory to get wiped for whatever reason. Improbable doesnt mean impossible..

Try using a multimeter to check the voltages and resistances.

As for the static, try each speaker on their own and see if its just coming out of one, 2 or more. Also try everything minus your new speakers. Its usually just a case of elimination till you single out (or at least minimise) the posibilities.

Just what I would start with anyway... Hope it helps.:o

Do you get static from the CD as well as the tuner?

Thanks for the advice Rhoobarb, but I can already see one problem, and that would be all of the above quote... You see, my ICE capabilities really only stretch as far as connecting the ISO connectors, whilst squinting through half closed eyes just in case the p*xy thing catches fire. I am not what you would call electronically adept. In fact I have just peeked out of the curtains to make sure that there is no orange glow emenating from the dash board. (There isn't.) I have managed to take on board all the previous hints and tips but I would admit to sweating bullets whilst making the necessary changes. And then there was the twitching. I have been a sweaty, twitching mess during the whole process.

You never know it could just be a simple short in a speaker wire or the tuner aerial causing the memory to get wiped for whatever reason.

But I though I had to disconnect the p*xy aerial cable.....?

Improbable doesnt mean impossible..

But it does most likely mean "bloody difficult"....

Try using a multimeter to check the voltages and resistances.

I'm going into meltdown here. And the twitching has started again.

As for the static, try each speaker on their own and see if its just coming out of one, 2 or more.

Please forgive my initial gormless description. The static does not come from a poor speaker connection. It is just that when I switch over to the tuner, it is not, well, tuned in. However, when I press any pre-set, the station is there, totally remembered and sans-static. I only ever get the evil white noise when swapping over to the tuner.

Now don't get me wrong here. I do sincerely appreciate all the feedback, it's just that I am finding myself at the end of very short tether, which seems to be shrinking on a daily basis. I am torn between the heavenly joy of an improved sound system, and the twitchingly psychotic urge to rip the p*xy thing out and hurl it out the window. It's the glitches y'see. I can't stand 'em. Some people would call that being anal about the whole thing. Others would know better than to mess with a twitching psychotic. Even I can see a common thread emerging here...

Would there be a safe quick fix out there, and by safe, I mean for the local populace in general? :o
