A TV Chef tests the Superb!

Featured Replies

While at the Mother-In-Law's yesterday, I noticed their "Live" magazine had a test of the new Superb, albeit by James Martin, the TV chef who likes cars apparently. He seems to quite like it!

but james martin is obviously a complete t*t who drives 500bhp supercars..

"With a 170bhp diesel, I needed a run-up of several miles to overtake anything faster than a milk float. "

stupid statement !

Well I drove a 170CR diesel this afternoon and thought it was plenty quick enough! I might be an old bugger but I have driven loads of fast cars and chased even faster ones and the performance of the 170CR is very good!

The chef bloke is a ****!

I have got to be honest here, while I cant agree fully with the "anything faster than a milk float" part, I did not feel that the 170 was "a fast car":O, To me it felt on a par with my old 130 PD TDi. A lot of that "feeling" could be down to it being so much more refined in it's delivery and having a much smoother, more evenly spread power than the old PD's all or nothing kick in the back feeling . I am more than sure it would have enough power to keep me happy, but that dont make it a fast car :sofahide:

...... but that dont make it a fast car :sofahide:

But that's a subjective statement. I wouldn't have thought it was designed to be a FAST car................just fast enough! And that, on todays roads, it certainly is! :D

This month's Esquire features it as well, reasonably complementry including "it is good enough to put some of the car's German rivals to shame"

bit patronising but then it is Esquire.

well obviously the chef drives a car almost 3times more powerful than a skoda....still think he would have prefered the maual to the dsg box.....im convinced it gives you more feel of the torque than say a dsg box would....tho the dsg im told is smoother and faster changes

As I said, I think I would be more than happy with it , I drove an M5 in the last few weeks , I guess EVERYTHING else I drive now for awhile is going to feel slow :rofl:

Isn't is still 0-60 in eight point something? That's hardly slow for a saloon - in fact there are MASSES of cars on the road that won't do that, included my last one - Saab 9-3 1.9Tdi Sport.

The way he makes the comment, he suggests that it is a really slow car - the specs I see suggest it's only marginally slower to 60 than an Octavia VRS, and an A3 Sportback 170 diesel.

I had my old MK I (1.9 PD) superchip'd, which gave it about 170bhp, same as my MK II CR. The new one is, as you say, far more refined in it's delivery. The power just seems to keep building whereas the PD engine gave a serious kick despite having the same power, and similar top end.

Yep, you don't get that sudden power in the CR engines; they get you there quick enough but just not with a feeling of urgency! In some respects the PD engines are more fun to drive.
