As title really, engine light come on but car running well with no apparent problems. Are there any faults that would cause this or do i just need a diagnostic? If so, any one with a VAG-COM lead in the Gloucester/bristol area?

You will need to get it plugged into VAG-COM/code reader/dealer computer. There are a fair few things which can put the EML on without other symptoms but without the fault codes you have little hope IMHO.

I keep getting the same fault code (can't remember the code at the mo) which relates to the evap having low flow (black cannister on o/s inner wing with one black pipe in and one out going to throttle area and electrical plug on top and makes a ticking noise now and then) but I just keep clearing it and it comes back on again in a couple of days. In fact I've got bored of clearing it now and it's on all the time :-)
