New Octy owner

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just bought an Octy SlX TDi estate. Quite a change from my last car a Rover 620ti. Just about everything is different, some better some not so. Main reason for change..... I needed a bigger boot. But now have a few questions, so any thoughts and suggestions:

1) It doesn't have the roof bars, so how easy (and expensive) are they to get and fit?

2) The TDi seems to have quite a good bit of poke from 2-3K but then it almost seems to run into a wall and only slowly builds back up. So what's likely to need looking at/fixing?

3) More power :) well coming from a 200+BHP saloon I do want a bit more, so what's the best way of getting? Jabba or tuning box?

4) What else should I be looking to do to it?

Lots of questions, so hope some answers.

thanks

p.s. yes do own an MG as well :)

SHOCK HORROR!!!

I've been going through some challenging times recently, but having mg-paul buy a smogmonster may just finish me off! :P

Well well well, another convert :D

Regarding tuning, I'm sure others will reply, but not sure what lump you have in the slx whether it's a 90, 100, 110 horses. If it's a 100bhp, then it's a PD engine which is tuneable to over 150bhp. If it's the older generation, not too sure what can be had out of them.

Edit: Take a look at Pete's excellent thread on useful mods here

There's only one chap I know of on the forum who has publicly stated he's broken the 200bhp mark, but others are creeping up ;)

So when are you chopping in the MG for a vRS ? :hilarius:

Hi and Welcome!

SLX TDi is 110bhp so, if you go the Jabba route, should get around 150bhp. Couple of peeps have got 110 TDi and are very pleased with the results.

If you decide to go the Jabba route....you can have OBD port remapping or custom remaping. Both are done on a rolling road except custom requires a change of the EEPROM. Cost is

Cheers Guys,

No Tfboy the MG is staying :) too much fun with the roof off.

As for tuning, 150 sounds good to me, but first I want to find out the cause of the hesitation at 3K almost feels as if the fueling is being restricted.

Thanks

Think you might be realising the torque range with your 110hp SLXI.

As for roof bars, the early Octy estates didnt have them, but a dealer in South London did do them, sourced by themselves I believe and they just drilled the roof and bolted them in-place. I think that now they can be retro-fitted by any dealer, but if memory serves correct there is something to do with strengthening the roof point/spreading the load issues to contend with....but yes it should be able to do roof bars.

The dealer in question was Elmers End garage which is south of Beckenham, funnily enough at Elmers End.

Roof bars are listed separately on ETKA, along with threaded plates which go inside the roof lining for the bars to bolt into. Total cost of parts (rails, trim pieces, plates and bolts) is somewhat over

DIY or does it have to be a garage job?

DIY or does it have to be a garage job?

Depends how brave you are drilling the roof after peeling back the roof lining without doing any damage.

Did the spoiler on the TF and that was when it was new :) was a bit scary. But then at least I know it was done right.

I think that I would opt for a garage which had done the job before to do my car. Just imagine drilling a hole in the wrong place............ :weeping:

Do you have the part codes? as if anything like the Rover dealers unless you can give them a part code they will swear blind the parts don't exist.

So then, now you have the new motor, what's it like - apart from the obvious "slow" ?

Did the Rover 620 go? Why? After all that work with the ICE install....

I can dig out the part numbers for the roof bars, but will have to wait till I get back in the UK - sounds like the 27th atm... :)

Roof bars are listed in ETKA Main Group 8 Sub Group 53 Illustration 853-30. The main part numbers are:

1U9 860 025B Roof rail left

1U9 860 026B Roof rail right

As I mentioned earlier there are quite a few other parts involved in the complete installation, but your dealer should be able to identify and order them.

If you come onto one of our group buys you'll get 10% off these prices or mention that your a Briskoda member and get 5% discount.

Have space on current one so if interested PM me for details.

When is that one finishing?

My insurance is due for renewal in a months time and I'll probably be changing to a more mod-friendly insurer.

Think you might be realising the torque range with your 110hp SLXI.

My 110 doesn't run out of steam until over 4000 rpm (then it tails off very rapidly) so if this is happening at 3k then there is something amiss.

Maybe a quick check with a VAG-COM would help?

Hi again all,

Tfboy, yes a bit slower than the Ti (but then it is about 1/2 the Horsepower) but not too bad have just done a 350 mile round trip and don't feel to tired or stiff. And yes the 620 has gone with ICE and even the rather tasty alloys (well they wouldn't fit this one) Still gives me room to try a different approach this time :)

The roof rails (trim kit etc) and a new door mirror control (missed that one when I checked it over) are on order and should be here by next saturday, so that gives me something for the bank holiday weekend.

As for power having had time and mileage to give it a good test out, I am fairly sure there is a fueling problem as I can get a nice boost of power (up to 4000) but not consistently I had a look at the MAF sensor and it looked a bit dirty so from reading other posts this seems like a good place to start... And Ebay did have a new one with the right part codes for

Update:

Have now fitted the roof rails This should have been an easy job as the octy is fitted with pre-drilled holes in the roof..or so it said in the instructrions.... Well mine didn't so I guess it was pre-roof rails. Made it a bit harder as had to work out where to drill and take it carefully. Took a bit of care to paint and seal the holes with silicone sealant so shouldn't have and issues with water (fingers crossed). Total cost for those interested was about
