ABS or something bad?

Featured Replies

Hi I have a 2 wk old octavia RS and had a weird thing happen. I was going over a medium sized speed hump but went a bit faster than I'd like so was still braking as I hit it. As I was at the top of it there was a thump that from memory came through the pedal ....I'm wondering whether itwas the abs or something more sinister. There doesn't seem to be any obvious scrapes under there car but can't see that well. Really wondering if I should get it looked at tomorrow in case. I would think if anything was going to hit underneath the front bumper etc would hit first as the nose would dive but nothing happened until the wheels were right on top. Could it maybe be the shocks hitting bumpnstops?

Could be! I drove my 4x4 over a 'table' recently, whcih had wierd blocks either side, that had a double curve. There was a bang which sounded as if the front axle had fallen out. Bit similar to yours? No probs on the car!!

Does sound like the ABS, so shouldnt be anything to worry about.

ABS to me; as well.

As you were at the top of the 'hump' the car would go light and with you still braking, this would mean that with less weight to provide grip but with constant braking force, would make the front wheels lock-up; and thus the ABS will cut in, with you feeling this through the brake pedal.

Next time, brake first and then accelerate when you are on the hump. This will give an inclination for the nose of the car to lift and thus mean there is less transfer of weight to compress the front springs as you drop off the hump.

ABS kicking in when the wheels were off the ground.

Had this happen many a time on the Cat & Fiddle meets.

Abs
