Boost Pressure on Stage 1 PD130

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Just after a bit of info on boost levels on a stage 1 remapped PD130.

I had my Fabia remapped at P Torque about a month ago.

Love the map, really pleased with it.

However I have a cheap boost gauge installed, a Swoosh one in PSI up to 30psi.

As standard it would hold boost at 19psi, and spike to 21psi very very occasionally, so I am inclined to think it overreads by just a tad.

After the remap at first, when flooring the throttle at about 2100rpm in 3rd the boost gauge would hit 23psi for a split second, then hold it there for a moment, then drop and hold to 22psi dropping slowly as it went higher up the RPM's,

However with the colder weather I have noticed that when doing the same the gauge now seems to spike for a split second to 25psi, it doesnt do this all the time, only when it very cold and the engine is fully warmed up, and as before it then drops to 23psi, then 22, then dropping further up the rev range.

Is this something I should be overly worried about - this split second spiking I mean?

Thanks

Joel

Have you got access to VAG-COM? Might be an idea to do some logging...

Don't trust a cheap boostgauge, they are often poorly calibrated.

I had one in my car and it measuerad 0.3bar (4.3psi) wrong against VagCom.

anyone with any more ideas?

Small spikes are nothing to worry about. It is sustained overboost that is more worrying

25PSI = just over 1.7 bar, so nothing to worry about for tiny periods. 22-23 PSI is quite reasonable for a mapped vRS, but I wouldn't want it to go any further than that on the stock turbo. The gauge slightly over-reading is nothing too drastic to worry about. You said stock was 19PSI which is a smidge over 1.3 bar, and I'm pretty sure 1.3 bar is the stock boost pressure anyway, maybe 1.35.

I wouldn't worry until you see the gauge showing wavering boost, or sustained boost of over 23 psi.

thanks for that... what is wavering boost though?

When you're holding full throttle and boost goes between say 18psi and 22psi, flickering back and forth. Should always be a steady needle - steady as a rock preferably. :)

would that indicate sticking vanes then possibly?

What tends to happen is I will apply full throttle in 3rd at about 2100rpm

It will hit 24-25 psi for a split second, hold at 23 psi for 2-3 seconds, drop to 22 psi then drop down as I get fruther up the rev range, at just over 4k I think it drops to 16psi?

It sounds OK to me. :) Mine holds 1.8 bar right up to 4000rpm and probably beyond (by that point I am keeping my eyes on the road :D) - but I do have a hybrid. Having never had a stock pd130 turbo I'm not sure what is safe and what is not. It sounds OK from what you say though.

Remapped on stock turbo was 1.77 bar up to 1.82 bar depending on mapper IIRC - personally I think 1.82 bar is too high.

The spike will be exhaust back pressure versus boost airflow, nothing to worry about. The variable vane turbo is used to reduce turbo lag, and as the vanes move, boost will spike, then level off.

As suggested, VAGCOM logging will give you much more accurate data, than a cheap a$$ed boost gauge,
