intake tube thingy? gunked up

Featured Replies

had my cambelt done and the mechanic said this intake (see attached pics) was all gunked up. He removed the black plastic tube at the bottom of the picture (intake 1, right hand picture), under that silver mushroom thing. and under in the tube the silver mushroom thingy was loads of gunk (intake 2, left hand picture).

he put his finger in and removed a large, black sticky mass of gunk with his fingers. he said its the intake connected to the manifold or something.

I found this statement on another thread related to this:

Don't scrape this out when the intake is attached to the engine as some could fall in, and get stuck inside, and bend a valve. That will ruin your day. Refer to the intake manifold cleaning procedures found elsewhere on the forums

1. How true is this quote (from the other thread on the anti judder valve in AHV engines)??????? As I am now worried he did something silly.

2. He said i should have the pipe cleaned as its not good for the engine and will help it run better and free up some horse power. he said cleaning it with brake fluid or something, and would be about 2 hours labour. is this good and useful or pointless / unneccasary ?

I have driven some 50 miles since he did and had no problems. :thumbdwn:

If its the actual inlet manifold thats bolted to the head, then buy new gaskets and remove it from the block to clean it.

It really does collect quite heavily on the internals of the intake system, usually down to the breather pipe reintroducing the gasses from the crankcase to the inlet plenum.

I took the EGR valve off of my 1.9TDI PD and it was caked up with crud, once clean the valve was easier to move and less restrictive. I did notice a significant improvement, but i did scrape as much as i could out of the cast inlet manifold.

But mine wasn't particulaly bad.
