Alternator pulley

Featured Replies

Just had a horrible noise from alternator .turned out they have a clutch kind of mechanism on the pulley.Ordered one from the stealership for £ 64.00.

To replace the pulley ,Skoda said you need a special tool to do it in situ.

I simply disconnected the power cables, removed the top 13mm bolt then loosened the bottom bolt, this I unscrewed as far as it would go before it fouls the fan, then cut through it with hacksaw, New bolts are pence to buy from local merchants.

My local autoelectrical chap changed the pulley for a fiver, then I inserted the new bolt from the back of the alternator and secured with a nut and locking washer.

One 8mm allen key bolt and you can remove the fan and the bolt doesnt foul it, even easier.

But (officially) you need the 2 pronged tool to hold the fan pulley. There are other ways of holding it...

I replace the bottom bolt with a piece of studding with a screwdriver slot in it. If you fit this with a nut, you can unscrew the stud to get the alternator off at any time without disturbing the fan.

It's a waste of time ordering parts from a Skoda agent - I recon my local place could keep his stock of Superb bits in a shoebox. The local VW dealer keeps the lot in stock.

Hello! I´m from spain and my english isn´t very good. Could you explain to me how do you change the alternator pulley? I think that I have the same problem in my superb tdi 130 awx and I would not like to remove the front end completely.

Thank´s!

Easy enough to get the 8mm allen bolt undone without the 2 pronged tool, just use the 19mm belt tensioning pulley and turn it the other way to put more tension on it and comes off a treat. Thats the way we do it on Skoda Assist, works every time and can change a pulley or alternator in 20 mins.

hope this helps

Thank you very much! Now I´m going to change the poly-v belt (alternator belt) but first I have to remove the climatronic belt. I´ll like to know how do it if I dont want to remove the front end...

If you remove the front undertray you can access the tensioner and remove the compressor belt. Before you remove the belt, check that the 14 AF nut on the end of the compressor shaft is tight. These have a habit of coming loose...
