Cambelt sensor

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Sorry if this has been asked before but I could not find it in a thread. How do you change the cambelt sensor on a Octavia Vrs 1. I know what you are going to say its the cambelt timing. But it is a intermittent fault, the enging management light comes on for a couple of days then goes off by itself or I turn it of with the laptop and Ross tech application. I even went on holiday to cornwall for two weeks with no light and no engine problems and it runs perfect. Just need to no if its a simple job or a problem.

Cheers

AFAIK there's no such thing as a cambelt sensor!

There's a TDC sensor on the engine though. If you've got Rosstech, could we get the fault code?

Ok a TDC sensor. I wiped the code today before noting it down but its the old cam/TDC sensor out of sync with the engine speed. I do remember it said intermittent. Which in alot of cases I have read is the cambelt out one tooth ? But the car starts ok, runs ok, pulls ok, no power loss, no miss fires, no problem with fuel mpg in fact runs fine. I took the sensor off today to see if there was anything obvious. Its a easy job just remove top cover and undo two 6mm bolts and off it comes. Anyone know how to check with a ohm meter?

I would still check the belt timing even if its intermittant. Has the belt been changed? A colleration fault is normally down to timing.

And for the record there are both camshaft and crankshaft sensors on the 1.8T.

The cam timing is pretty easy to check. Roll the crank onto TDC (you can see the mark through the top of the bell housing) and then remove the cambelt cover. Your mark on the camshaft pulley should be inline or just slightly before the mark on the cam cover. A chap once asked this sometime ago on here and he brought it into see my at the Skoda dealer I used to work at, He had been having issues for ages and another garage had replaced cam sensor, crank sensor the works and still not sorted it. Ali got it in, set the timing right and since then myself and Ali have always looked after his car.

This was it when we saw it first

Soon as that was done it was fine.
