whistling noise on cold start up

Featured Replies

hi. i'm gettin a whistling noise (similar to a turbo whistle) on my Vrs from starting the car from cold. its a permanent whistle when the car is left on tickover. have checked all induction hoses for splits and cracks, but cant find anything. its pretty hard to pinpoint where the noise is coming from, but once you start driving, the noise goes away.. and ideas???

Snormal fella, most Fabia vRS's do it.

Does it change with engine revs? If just when cold it could just be pulleys and drive belt for alternator. try a squirt of WD40 on the belt.- or even water if you're worried about a lubricated belt. If it's that, then it will change noises.

Don't go lubing any belts - they all do it, and it's normal!

You will also see the exhaust gas speed up when the whistle gets loud.

I presume it's something to do with the variable vanes in the turbo changing profile and speeding up for emissions?

Roger Wittaker CD in the head unit?

Seriously though, sounds normal, but check vacuum hoses for signs of splits or cracking. If there is a vacuum leak, you will probably hear a wheeze when you switch the engine off.
