Coolant level dropped

Featured Replies

I'm slighty confused.I've been getting the warning chimes quite randomly which I put down too the furry probes issue, but last night I noticed the level has dropped about an inch below the mimimum marker.

Anyone know why .......lol Car runs fine btw in fact it's purring lately so i doubt I've hurt it.

And my next question, is it ok to top up with just water or should I get some G12 in with it as well.

G12 is ideal, but I'd think putting a touch of water in and seeing if you're losing any wouldn't be a bad idea.

You do have to ask where it's gone though. Any leaks on the bottom of the radiator or sides of the engine?

If you have not had the coolant changed I'm guessing it might be worth a flush, leak test and fill up with fresh coolant anyway.

Hi Fatty

As it is so flamin cold , I would add some G12

But usually water OK

Check around for some crustation signs

Check bottom of the rad if you can get to see for the rad fan switch as that can usually leak a bit

Good luck my dear

Great minds ;) (sorry if you think like me)

A decent antifreeze (and G12 variations are certainly that) does more than just stop your coolant turning to ice. They're also anti-corrosion packages and "water wetters" (which raise the boiling point of the coolant).

I'd mix 50/50 once I'd found the leak if any. As the lovely Sarah says, there's usually a crusty deposit (white or rust coloured) around a leak.

Just hope it's not leaking into the cylinders....

I assume I would have noticed something not right by now ???

Not too sure, because the amount of steam I used to get out of mine on a cold

day, you would never know. I would get it pressure tested if it drops any more..

Yes your right there they cough out one hell of a lot of steam, mine has always done this during the cold months.

Mine always kicked out a lot of steam in cold weather.

I would check the obvious hoses and also the bottom corners of the radiator.

It's worth having an antifreeze tester for getting the mixture right. If it's too strong it can cause problems.

Well I had a quick nose around the engine bay and all looks well from what I can see.

I'm going too nip and get some G12 from VW and an anti freeze tester thing.

Right .................

I got some G12 and a tester ................heres my results, can someone tell me WTF it means, I see it as I need more G12 in there, am I right

Mmmm if it says it reccomends 129c then yes , I would

Sarah

That's what I'd read it as meaning, although I'm more used to them reading out the actual percentage antifreeze in the system, or the freezing point of the mix, rather than the boiling temperature!

It cost me £4. I suppose at that price it was bound to be *** backwards.:rofl::rofl:

I shall top up with anti freeze in the morning............Thats if it hasn't frozen

It was minus 2.5 this morning at 8.30, so I'm guessing it was colder through the night.

It will be fine :)
