Is there a permanent live when key removed?

Featured Replies

Hi there, everyone

My question is this....Is there a permanent live wire, suitable for connecting to my hi fi unit near to and accessible from the central part of the dashboard. I am sure I read somewhere that there are no 'permanent' lives when the key is removed and car locked and secure (I think I read something on these forums but cannot be sure).

I need to identify (by colours, If there are any experts out there....) a switched live and a permanent live.

I need to reset my hi fi unit evry time I switch it on and I think it may be that the permanent live supply to the init is not connected.

I hope I have made myself understandable.lol

thanks for reading

Tom

not sure on octy 2 but on the fabia the traditional cure for keeping the CD player's memory live was to swap yellow & red wires over. I believe yellow was the permanent live.

2 things come to mind: 1. The ciggy lighter is permanently live, could you run a cable from its supply under the centre console. and. 2. Whip off the fuse cover at the right hand end of the dash and check for a live with a meter - then run a wire under the dash to the radio.

You have got the perm live and switched live reversed. Swap the yellow and red wires over :)

Like others have said, there's a permanent live in the radio harness, but in VAG cars the perm & switched are the wrong way round to most radios. Switch the red and yellow (sometimes red/orange) wires at the radio.

ok guys

I will let you know

I think I agree with that crossed wires theory........

Can I just give a hearty thanks to those who replied. It's so heartwarming to know there are a few decent types out there

thx agaoin

Tom

Sounds like you have them the wrong way, got a pioneer in mine and it works without the key in.

Just a pain in the butt that it doesn't have a switched live to turn it off with the ignition.

Read all the above!! You need to swap the yellow and red wires too. When you swap them over it will turn off with the ignition. :)

Both +ve's on the Quadlock should be perm live I would think. Look on the sticker on your streem and you'll see one is marked safe.

This way results in me loosing all the ruddy settings from the headunit.

Look on this website Car Audio Direct - Volkswagen/Seat wiring adaptor - Fitting Adaptor, where it states "This harness will plug direclty into the cars radio wiring loom. But as there are no ignition or illumination feeds in the main loom you will need to hard wire these if required." I've got this adaptor, if there is any other adaptor that does work then please let me know.

Im also annoyed at the fact that ive bought the aerial amplifier and it doesnt work, even when connected to the headunit GRRR!

Guys, all you've got to do is read and understand the label on the back of the radio you remove. Once you have this sorted you compare and align that with what you need to feed your new headunit with - simple headunit fitting stuff, nothing difficult.

If you can't work that out get yourself a multimeter. £20k cars and you are taking chances!!

Safe and U/B + are both perm live.

There is NOT a switched live on the back of the radio in the Octavia II. If you need a switched live the you need to run from the fuse panel and I suggest the genuine Skoda kit.

Is perfectly correct.

What have you connected your antenna amplifier to?

I connected the celcius radio adaptor, personally i think its garbage. And if anyone can suggest a decent alternative then i would be more than welcome to giving it a go.

The wire pulled out, and i can get a very weak signal.

And as i quoted from the relevant website, i understand that i would have to wire them in seperately!

Seeming as im no auto electrician i will persevere with turning it off manually.

I've suggested a decent alternative, the Skoda kits!!! If you buy the Skoda kit that I mention it will contain everything you need to make your headunit work. That includes the extra wiring loom and most importantly how to wire it in at the fuse panel, it's plug and play!!

For some reason people always seem to thing they are getting ripped off by buying from Skoda or that they'll get an inferior product - What you'll get is the proper parts you need, and some instructions.

Here you go, I knew I had a picture somewhere from when I fitted one for somone -

Didn't even know skoda produced one, going down to collect the adapter for the top of the airscoop tomorrow, will probably inquire about this and maybe order it.

What sort of price can i expect stu?

On the plus side it looks far tidier and of a better build.

The only downside i can see is that with the Celcus radio surround adaptor, is that its got a plastic insert around the headunit to hide the fastenings.

In this trim i have had my clifford interior warn away l.e.d fitted to, so relocating maybe on the to do list.

Many Thanks Again!

Top Notch Advice!

As above mate the RRP is £52. I've got lots of other pictures of the install but it was of a single DIN HU. IIRC you had a double DIN didn't you?

It is better build that the Autoleads ones I've seen, not cheap if you only want the wiring but a good price if you need everything.

When you refer to needing everything, could you elaborate a little on that for me please?

Whats included and could you possibly tell me the part no's for the items above?

I've got a single din pioneer headunit in the car.

Thanks everyone for the replies........

I checked out thoroughly the power on the wiring loom that fits into my particular unit. (It's one of those cheaper satnav,dvd,tv,mp3, play everything units that looks similar to the MFD2's available on EBay)

I can positively (lol) say that there is a permanent live supply to the end of the wiring loom that connects to a box of tricks that connects to my unit. There is no switched power supply save for a very thin wire (clearly not designed to take any heavy current) that is part of the loom. There is a little piece of pcb in the quad socket that actually manages to produce a switched power supply to the piece of wiring loom that comes with the sat nav unit (not part of the car loom).

The end result is that the unit was wired correctly.

However, I can see the sense in using a correct piece of kit to provide a correctly rated cable from the fuse box as suggested by vrStu as it is easy to imagine someone using the low current switched positive on the loom to provide power and this could easily lead to melted wiring and risk of fire.

So thanks again to all the conributors to this thread

Tom

Use a meter to find unsued fuse positions with perm live in the fuse panel.

You'll get everything in that picture but I'm not sure on the silver fascia, I can't remember tbh it may be black when bought.

The part numbers for the kit are posted above.
