Charging battery

Featured Replies

I have a Octy 55 plate 140 dsg Elegance, can i charge my battery up whilst connected ?.Sometime ago i had a motor which "they" said you have to disconnect from the car before using a remote charger.

generally it's a good idea to disconnect the battery terminals while charging a battery - and you should remove the battery from the car to avoid gases building up in the engine bay

Best bet is look in the handbook and / or call Skoda. Can't remember the last time I put any battery on charge. Once it's at that stage it's not normally a good sign....

If you have an older charger it depends on whether it is a trickle charger - 2-4 amps - or a booster 8+ amps. At a trickle you can leave the battery connected whilst charging 8-12 hours. If a high amp charger then disconnect the battery and be careful ob the time you charge for - do the maths, battery capacity/charge rate = hours to charge (assuming the battery is nearly flat else guestimate the amount of charge you want to put in and calulate).

If you have a modern computer controlled charger suitable for gel and calcium batteries then you can leave the battery connected and the charger will take care of everything.

if the battary is a maintanance free type , and is discharge bellow 9 volts , you will never re charge it to full charge ,you will only surface charge the battary , it may indicate 12 volts ,but it will not be in a state of deep charge, you will need a smart charger witch will charge the batt by pulsing upto 18 volts,

( a surface charge will charge the gas presant on top of the battery cells and will in most cases start the engine) i agree with SCOOBYNUT replase the battery.
