Weird lights and indicator warning electrical problem

Featured Replies

Can anyone give me some pointers...

Until a couple of months ago, if I accidently left the headlights or indicator on when getting out of the car the warning signal would sound. But now, instead of the warning signal, the near side side lights come on.

Weird. What makes it worse is that the other day I didn't think about it, left the lights on for several hours while I was at work, and of course the battery was dead when I came to leave work.

Anyone have any ideas? Cheers!

I think that you are slightly confused about what you have done/seen/heard in the past.

1) Leave the lights on will mean that the lights on warning will sound when you open the driver's door with the key out - the parking lights will be on on both sides.

2) Leave the indicator stalk across at the RHS or LHS position will mean that you will hear the lights on warning when you open the door with the key out - but only one side of the parking lights will be on - depending on where the indicator stalk was left.

Is that not what is happening?

BTW, I'd be concerned if leaving the parking lights on all (the working) day flatened your battery - probably you need a new battery or the charging system checked over, or you are only travelling a very short distance and so should consider charging the battery up every few days.

On top of that, if the warning is not sounding then it will probably have failed.

Thanks guys

Come to think of it I don't think I left the parking lights on - I think it was the full lights. I know, I know...

However, I had become used to relying on the audible signal. I didn't explain what's happening very well. What I'm finding is...

Leave lights on - no audible signal

Leave indicator on - near side parking lights left on, no audible signal

I think it is the case that if I left indicator RHS on then the off side parking lights would be on. It's just that I've only really noticed it when I've pulled up to the near side kerb, hence leaving LHS indictor on

Any pointers anyone? It's weird!

I think that the audible warning in the dash cluster has failed, not uncommon, but expensive to fix as you need new clocks and they need to be coded by the dealer or possibly someone with VAG-com.

When you indicate normally with the ignition switched on, do you still get the ticking noise or has that gone too?

Other than that the parking light seem to be working normally;

Ignition off, left indicator on - LH parking lights

Ignition off, right indicator on - RH parking lights.

That's helpful. So the parking lights operate anyway when the indicator is left on and ignition off.

So it's the audible signal that's gone. Yes - the ticking noise works ok when ignition is on.

I really want that audible signal back!
