Noisy fabia 1.4mpi

Featured Replies

Hi all, would appreciate your thoughts on the following.

I have just had some work done (by Skoda Specialists) replacing the timing chain and service (including brakes) amongst other things.

The car was fine for a while, but now I am getting a rumbling noise (a bit like when you have the window open) at speed. I suspect that the car is not set up properly (in fairness it was when it left the garage) has anyone had similar experiences? It's worse at 60mph+ but you can (only just) feel / hear it at lower speeds.

I thought it might be from the front brakes originally, but I now suspect it needs to go back to the garage and the running set up by the computer again. I have a slight tappet noise but don't think this would cause these problems.

Any thoughts / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks and regards

I am now fairly certain my tyres are (very) unbalanced.

Will get this checked out.

If its your tyres/wheels unbalanced are you feeling vibrations through the steering wheel at the same time as the rumbling noise? If you got tyres changed they may not have balanced them correctly on fitting new ones. Or could be something as simple as one of the weights has flew off whilst driving.

Just out of interest why did you get the timing chain changed? I thought it was something which just lasted forever - or at least a very long time. We have a 1.4 mpi with a timing chain (year 2000) & it has now done around 47k. Have no intentions of changing the chain anytime yet.

The noise the chain makes is just horrible. Changed mine aswell, all's quiet and nice now :)

Thanks for that.

Timing chain was VERY noisy and a lot better now. I have a noisy tappet too, which will be sorted next.

I am feeling vibrations in the car and through the steering wheel.

I need new front tyres so will get this sorted asap, hopefully it will sort the problem.

Cheers

The RAC Man says my chain needs sorting as it's really noisy - what should I be asking the garage to do ? and does anyone have a rough estimate to help decide whether I'm being taken for a ride?
