Xbox Gears of War 2 game ruined?

Featured Replies

My son is pretty upset as his mother moved his xbox from downstairs up to his room but the game was still in the xbox and when it was turned on again the drive made a stange noise and now the game won't play. Took the game out and there is a scratch around the edge of the disc, other games still play fine. Anybody know if the disc can be used again or does his mum owe him a new game?

You could get the disc repaired. It's quite likely to just be a scratch on the protective plastic cover (the data is not stored on the outside edge of the disc). There's a place in the market in Hereford that repairs scratched cds in a matter of seconds, he charges about 50p a time and it's worked every time we've had a scratched CD. You just need to find somewhere similar in your home town. I think even PC world do it?

Could be considerably cheaper than the £25 a new game would cost :)

And a tip for the future? Never move an xbox with a disc in the tray, the disc drive is the most common component to fail on an xbox (i think!) - we've had 3 failures in this household (2 xboxes) :o

Thanks for that I'll give it a go.

My wifes excuse was that she didn't know, so I said if you don't know don't touch!

Most Gamestations carry out on site disc repairs iirc, not sure what they charge though

Someone once said T-Cut works on scratched CDs lol. Never tried it myself, but have used T-cut to remove scratches from plastic things before and it worked!

Or silver polish.

I have successfully repaired a scratched PS2 game using Brasso.

The scratches weren't deep but were all over the disc. I polished with Brasso, washed with soapy water, dried then used a standard CD cleaner. If you try remember to rub from centre to the outer edge.

You can also get a replacement disc for Gears of War 2 for a tenner via the Microsoft XBox Disc replacement plan, see here:

The order form tells you all you need to know.
