cat back or turbo back exhaust

Featured Replies

just read an interesting thread on a mkv forum, guy on there believes that the full turbo back exhaust system sees hardly any gains over the cat back option, and in his opinion if you going stage 2, you just need cat back exhaust, intake and remap. to get the same results

any thoughts on that,

in fact it was VRStu.

has that been proven on rolling road or by personnel experience, cos if so, ill just do the cat back and save my self 500 and do the suspension instead

Who's VRStu........

Never heard of him

I want to know this one too, was about to post the same question :)

Today I installed the CAI and the Bluefin stage 2 softeware but with the standard exhaust, what can I say? its already very noticable over the stage 1 and the power comes in very hard indeed.....its not as smooth as stage 1 but thats not to say i dont like it :)

In this weather (dry but cold) the ESP light just comes on in 2nd and 3rd when giving it full welly which it didnt do before.

I drove a 100 mile round trip to Alnwick today and on the way there I was booting it....acceleration in 6th from 80 to 1** is incredible!

On the way back i took it easy so i could guage the change in MPG with the new map, I managed to get 41.6 mpg average, mostly dual carriage way at 60-70 and then about 3 miles in town.....thats about 4 mpg better than it was as standard.

I'm going to get my exhaust sorted as soon as we know what is best, I'd rather not shell a grand out for an exhaust :)

Good luck with yours!

thank you very much for that, i have a nice grin now.:D

im still going to buy the cat back exhaust i think, as i want a little more noise to go with the extra grunt.

but i think ill spend the 500 saved from the turbo downpipe part on the suspension instead.

you need to get your motor on the dyno and get those results on here:),

january is going to be a good month.

are you going to get the cat back first then upgrade later cos i would be very interested to know what you think of it with just the cat back on, i think i would like to do it in stages as well

Here is a dyno test of Jetex cat back and turbo down pipe fitted.

Rolling road results for new Jetex 1.8T large bore downpipe and sports cat!

thanks for that, interestingly it shows that they pretty much provide the same amount of power each, with the turbo back providing that slight bit extra, which is exactly the information i was after. i think i will do it in stages now!

It doesnt really seem worth £500 for 7bhp!

I think I'll go with the cat back and then do the catalyst when mine needs doing. Hopefully will get this sorted later in the month.

Actually looking at the numbers on the Jetex site there is no way of knowing what the sports cat and down pipe on its own would produce.

The figures show that the cat back on its own was 5bhp but the full system was 12bhp, suggesting that the cat and down pipe are worth 7bhp but it may not be as simple as that.

For example do we know what diameter the standard exhaust is? the sports cats seem to be 3" bore pipes but if for example the standard system is 2.5" then you may actually harm performance. If its the same then it would be fine and probably no need for the cat back section.

Its also possible to remove a silencer to gain some performance from the standard setup. For example when i used to be into Corrado VR6's the standard exhaust was actually very good but the cat was restrictive so we used to remove the cat (de-cat) and also the first silencer which was a striaght pipe, we would swap that for just a piece of pipe.

My guess is that this can be done cheaply but it needs some R&D

I did this on my last VR6 too- used to spit flames when really going for it! Sounded awesome. Miss that car :(

I've got a Blueflame catback at the mo, and I'm buying a secondhand Jetex downpipe/sports cat (100cel) next weekend. I'm also considering replacing the mid-silencer with a straight pipe, but I'll wait to see what difference the downpipe makes first.

would the downpipe and catalytic converter not be the most restrictive part of the exhaust though, therefore the best gains available in stages would be to do the downpipe first, and not the other way around.

the bloke behind this link believes that the pre-requisite to bluefin is performance down pipe.

GTI Bluefin Stage 2 remap

im torn between to ideas. do i get the cat back for the sound or do i sacrifice the sound for the better power and torque figures.

im gradually moving towards the downpipe option as i think it'll do the map more justice, maybe make it smoother, its only for a month till i get the other half of the exhaust anyway.

Its a shame there isnt much more information on this, I'm not bothered about a loud exhaust myself, getting a bit old for that now :)

I just want to get the best gain for my money without spending £1000! thats more than 10% the cars value. I might talk to a few tuners and see what their opinion is.

Hey Andy....where you a CCGB member? I used to knock abouty with that crowd and wondered if you were one of those guys.

Dear Hofmiester i want to ask you something. Today i called bluefin service and gave them my serial number. They sent me the Stage 2 remap. How will i install it ? Can you please help :)

you plug it into your computer and then once on the bluefin program click connect to superchips,

it will then download your new stage 2 map over the top of the old stage 1 map. once this is done, it is exactly the same as before, plug it into your diagnotic port do the on screen stuff again,

go for a drive then get back online and let me know how it was.

mines all downloaded, just waiting for the intake toarrive in the post before i upload the new map on my car

Thanks mate... the told me that the remap was ready but i think it is not. It says you will be notified of any future updates . . .

that never happened on mine, did you recieve the email stating you new remap was ready to download, if not id give them a ring and tell the, no doubt they will resend another,

are you ptting your map on prior to the exhaust as well or waiting till after

Ok guys i ordered my sports cat and down pipe.

I went with Pipewerx in the end, i had never heard of them but having done some research it turns out to be one guy who custom makes them himself and is well regarded on the Dub scene, he built his own twin engine MK3 etc and has done quite a lot of custom car exhausts.

I got the price down to £450 inc VAT delivered (was £477) but i think he may go lower for a group buy?

This is a 3" down pipe and comes with a 3" to 2.5" adaptor to fit to a standard system, ideal for upgrading to the Jetex cat back later as thet is also 3" and costs £409.

Should be able to do the lot fitted all in for under a grand.

I got an e-mail, then i connected my bluefin to pc. I am installing it before the exhaust upgrade. I only have K&N induction kit.

p.s. i have e-mailed them already ... waiting for their reply

‘V12′ Passat Project - German Car Scene

This is the chap at pipewerx...Ian Birch, i remember he built some mad stuff in the past when he was at Dubsport.

He assures me that this downpipe and cat are the shizzle....we shall see, I've taken a punt on this as others rate him and his past work has been bonkers :D

agree with that. it looks like a bargain. is there anywhere that supplies and fits

I think they can fit but are based in Wigan so no good for me but may be ok for you?
