Auto, Tip Auto, and DSG. What goes with what engine?

Featured Replies

Hello all

I'm thinking of changing my 2003 Octy1 vRS for an used Octy2 with DSG, but browsing Autotrader and Parkers has got me confused.

I can find cars described as DSG, Auto and Tip Auto.

Can anyone clear a few things up for me?

Are all Octavia2 Auto boxes DSG?

Do some Octavia2's have non-DSG autoboxes?

Is a Tip Auto a non-DSG auto with a sequential manual overide (like proper Tiptronic) or is it another name for DSG?

If I want a DSG, what engine choices do I have?

Thanks in advance and best regards..........Jonathan

I

I can tell you this much;

Tiptronic - is a traditional automatic gearbox with torque converter and manual selection ability (tiptronic) - this has been/is available on petrol engine Octavias e.g. 1.6mpi 102bhp, 1.6FSI 115bhp and 2.0FSI 150bhp but not on the 2.0TFSI 200bhp vRS.

DSG - is the VAG group twin clutch preselect automated manual, rated by many as the best of its type - this is/has been available on diesel engine Octavias e.g. 1.9TDI PD 105bhp and 2.0TDI PD 140bhp but not the 2.0TDI PD 170 vRS.

For the 2009 model year both the 2.0TFSI 200bhp and 2.0TDI CR170 bhp vRS are now available with the DSG gearbox.

Does this help?

Hi my 08 octavia estate vrs tdi 170 cr has a dsg box fitted. I believe it was the 1st in the country as i had to special order it although i think they are readily available now.

Anyway its an awesome box revs dont drop when you change

hope this helps

If it is a diesel octy 2, then it will be DSG only. I know you could (maybe still) get the petrol with a traditional auto box with tiptronic control.

If you discount steering wheel paddle controls, then both the petrol auto and diesel DSG auto will have some form of manual control in that you move the gear selector over then you push up and down to change gear.

Of course DSG and a traditional auto are different beasts in how they work as auto boxes.

In mine (and many other peoples opinion), the DSG is king.

Ditto

DSG for me!!!! Best 'box I have ever had!!!!

Don't even think about a Tiptronic; compared to a DSG they are dreadful, severe jerks between gear changes and often in the wrong gear. Fuel consumption on Tiptronics is terrible whereas DSG's have consumption almost identical to manual versions.

I had a Superb 2.5 tiptronic- lovely car but by the time the turbo lag and the torque converter had muddled around you needed to be putting on the power about 5 minutes before you wanted to move. The shifts were very smooth, although that might have something to do with the weight of the car. Certainly my mum's Octavia DSG is much more responsive.
