I'd say that sounds pretty normal for a diesel, in outside temperatures of zero degrees or less? My petrol takes about 2 miles, but all my previous cars (diesel) have taken just as long as yours in this weather.

Thats why the Golf and other 'prestige' variants come with an electric additional heater.

Yep, pretty common with modern diesels. They use too much of the fuel for making the engine turn rather than heating the cabin.
