Front Wiper Problems

Featured Replies

Firstly I am not too technical when it comes to car hence me asking advice on this site.

The problem I have is with the front windscreen wipers. They were working on my drive to work today and about 20 minutes in stopped working, I have checked the fuse in the fuse box and swapped it over with another to make sure but with no success. When I do however engage the wiper stalk to squirt the screen wash the front wipers do not start but the rear wiper does a single pass. Also when I try to get the front wipers to go to various modes nothing happens.

The temperature this morning was -5deg C and since arriving at work I have added about half a litre of hot water to the washer bottle to keep the water temperature up. Yes before you ask there is screenwash fluid in the bottle and not just water.

Does anyone have any possible solution to this problem?

Many thanks in advance,

But if you added 0.5 litres of just hot water to your washer bottle (which is only 2 litres big) then, assuming it was already 75% full, you have just diluted the (probably already diluted) washer solution by adding 0.5 litres of water, meaning the freezing temperature of the fluid in your washer bottle is now even higher than it was before.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the wiper problem but if you have access to concentrated washer fluid I'd get it in with the rest of your water before it has chance to freeze :)

Sean,

I would have said that it was definately the fuse. The same thing happened to me last week. When i went to clean the front screen the rear wiper came on. After investigating not only did the fuse blow but because the water in the washer pipe had frozen it had popped the connector at the bulkhead for the rear washer hose.

The fuse to change is fuse no.15 and it should be replaced with a 10 amp fuse. The fabia fusebox can be very confusing to read as it is a mirror image. Here's a link to Stu's website which shows the layout.

Other than that check the hose connectors havent popped off.

I cant see anything being seized as you said it worked for the first twenty minutes and the fact that you tried to clean the screen its probably blown something.

Hey all,

I have had the same problem with fuses going ( as a new Fabia owner ), and I have changed and checked the three main fuses mentioned in various threads on this great site... but I still cannot get the wash pump to engage..no sound at all. Do we know if there is a separate fuse for this or is it a trip to the dealer?

Thanks in advance

So you try to clean both front and rear screens and no water comes out and the wiper arms dont move?

One other thing that affect the wiper operation is the bonnet switch. Make sure it's properly closed.

The wiper arms move both front and back (after changing the blown fuse) but no screenwash comes out front or back and I cannot hear the washpump engaging.

Thanks for the quick reply!:wave23d

Is the contents of the washer bottle frozen? Have you checked the connectors for the washer hoses? If the parts of the washer system are frozen this will cause the fuse to contually blow. Other than the bonnet switch it could just be down to the actual pump if you have replaced the necessary fuses.

Thanks very much to both of you!! There was a bit of dirt around the bonnet latch that was just stopping it from engaging fully.

All is now working.

Many thanks!

Many thanks to you all for your input. It was fuse No. 15 in the end. Checked all the other bits too make sure first and is now working fine.

I'll be back again if I have any more problems as this site is one of the best I've used.

Regards,
