Speed Bumps

Featured Replies

Is it better to let your car just roll over speed bumps or to run over them at normal driving speeds such as 25- 30mph?

As a local garage is saying that more damage is caused at lower speeds.

Take a speed bump at 30mph and then 20mph, tell me which feels gentler and which sounds gentler and base your decision on that.

I'd rather take speed bumps at 10 or 15mph than 30...

Personally I go dead slow, and almost come to a stop if it's a big one.

Higher speeds can only mean higher forces......

sounds sensible to me :)

However some speed humps can be taken at sensible speeds

Sorry but which idiot garage is saying that ? I wouldn't be using them again if that's the sort of thing they advise customers.

:iagree:

They are obviously short of work

Never thought of any way of proving it ,but always thought that drive shafts could be in the firing line too-due to sort of whiplash effect - anyone any ideas ??

They should rip up the speed bumps

Just to clarify the question was on behalf of somebody at work and he only gave me half the story.

The (independent) garage in question said that a lot of cars are coming in with loose shock obsorbers and it was one of his "know all" friends that said drive faster over speed bumps is better than driving slowly and not the garage.

The whole point of speed bumps is to slow you down. If you want to damage your car and throw your passenger(s) around, feel free to travel over the bumps at speed!

Tell him to ignore his friend then. Change word in my orig post from "garage" to "friend".....

personally i dont mind speedbumps that cover the whole road its the little humped ones you get.... what in hells name are they all about... if someone hopped into my car and drove over them im pretty sure the sump would be left on the speed mound!!

they are rediculous... even a standard fabia vrs's under tray catches... and im down on coilovers :( - crawling speeds and i need to 'split' them :(

Maybe these brain dead jerks are trying to bring in more repair business!

You often can't tell how severe some of the bumps are by looking at them. At 30MPH you can do some serious damage if they are the steep sided type.

lol

yea

I slow right down ppll behind get peed off at me but i not breakin my car for them. I have to go at an angle on some round my area to get over them. they are the stupidest thing invented for the roads IMHO.

even some of the roads into staplehill (bristol) I travel on at 20mph as they are so rough.

 I think I do about 1-3mph over them.

Plus I'll always try to go over two of them at the same time so the car doesn't twist and try to go over the flat top. I read / heard that going over the sloped edges can affect the geometry (tracking/camber ?) on the wheels. No idea if it's true but I'd like to avoid paying out if I can help it.

yea mate ive heard that too.
