Heads up - Autocar 14th Jan - Superb 2 V Bentley

Featured Replies

Just seen the "in next weeks mag....." in this weeks Autocar (7th Jan) and they are testing the Superb 2 against a bentley etc........

Might be work a buy/looksy next week!

Saw fifth gear a couple of days ago and they compared the Superb 2 to the merc C class.

Build quality - Skoda best

Depreciation - Skoda on par

Badge snobbery - Skoda no problem

Consumer opinion - most thought it was a BMW and were not concerned about the Skoda badge.

I think Skoda must be going in the right direction at last.

Hope so anyway - for all you lucky gits that have the Superb 2.

I'm not jealous - really no really no really really - ok yes i am then!!

Autocar magazine is out today, haven't read it yet but the title on the cover is "Skoda beats Bentley" :)

Sounds like a cool article, I shall go out and get it later one and have a read.

Just read the article.

Test against an A6, a7-series, a Bentley and the Superb.

And that's the order they come out!

They said the Superb had a better cabin/more space than the A6, rode better than the 7-series, and was on-par with luxury to the Flying Spur :)

So the Superb came last

I read that as the Superb being in first place.

Bagpuss.

funny how we see things differently isnt it ? I read the fact that as the superb was last in the sentance it must have come last in the review and that the A6 was 1st !!

Surely the main point to note is that Autocar decided to compare it against the other cars mentioned. That speaks volumes in itself.

agree !

I have the magazine in front of me and can confirm the Superb won :)

It was more a test of the cars credentials as a luxury car. They chose to test the 170TDI Superb so it fell short on performance. Pity Skoda UK didn't have a 3.6 V6 for them to try yet as that is quite close in performance to the others too!

The article said that the rear seat legroom was second only to the 7 Series BMW, that the satnav being standard was something that the others could learn from and that on both fuel consumption and value for money it was streets ahead.

I was delighted to see that they compared it with the BMW 7 Series (I'd have thought that the 5 Series would have been a more natural competitor) and the Audi A6 (A4 might have been a closer price match). To include the Bentley was a bit of a gimmick, I think, but the truth is they thought that Skoda had really pulled one out of the bag with the new Superb, implying that it was at least worthy of inclusion the £40,000 class. That, in itself, is a very positive result for the marque.:)

Ray.

Totally agree.

When I was choosing my new company car last year, I looked at the Superb, A4, A6 and 5-series beemer. Sadly, the Bentley was a little bit too much for my allowance to cope with :D

I chose the Superb, as not only was it cheaper (I could have afforded decent versions of the others), but it was also the best all round car.

What with the recent Car review, the Fifth Gear spot and this article, I think Skoda must be rightly pleased. There will still be badge snobs out there who will never choose a Skoda, but the tide is turning.

No offence to any new superb owners but 'value for money' must have had a massive weighting on the results :)

The question Autocar asked was "How much do you need to spend to buy a proper luxury car?" so sporting and performance credentials were largely ignored in the group test. Incidentally, the BMW 7 series model was the long-wheelbase version of the 750, which is why it had more space in the back than both the Superb and Bentley. In this comparison test, if they had used the V6 Superb then outcome may not have been as good - on the assumption that the suspension on that will be much firmer.

Point is - a great bit of publicity for Skoda and a cracking article to cut out and keep, to show to your 'knowledgeable' mates when they buy yet another Mondeo and look down their noses at your pride and joy! :D

Read the article and you'll see they say that's what they expected too - but it's not the way it turned out

Couldn't believe my eyes when the article said the beemer was £70,000

Out of the four, I actually prefer the design of the Superb's interior, am I weird? lol. I've only sat in the Superb out of those 4 but neither the Audi or BMW's looks that special and the Bentley is a bit OTT.

Some quotes from the article:

"Skoda has engineered the Superb blind to the knowledge that you can't make a luxury car for less than £40,000, let alone for a little more than £20,000"

"In a test peppered with the unexpected, all pale into insignificance compared with the abilities of the Superb"

"The Superb is an outstanding package for a little over £22k"

"It has competed hard and on merit, outriding the BMW, offering more space than the Audi and refinement levels close to the Bentley's. It's a proper luxury car and for the space, comfort and quiet offered for the money being asked, it is the most impressive here."

interesting how they say it has more space than the A6. I dont agree and i have owned both an A6 and now a superb.

yes - there is more rear leg room but...the rear is narrower making it impossible to get an adult inbetween two kids seats. In the A6 my wife could squeeze in for short journeys but not in the superb. This is partly due to the layout rather than the absolute measurements. the outer two rear seats are deep and thus the kids seats move more toward the middle of the car than in the A6.

Also - we coudl get the kids buggy lengthways in the boot of the A6 but the superb is about 2 inches shorter meaning it wont fit unless we put it diagonally. not a major issue but just one to note ! There is also less sotrage space up front in the superb and the cabin feels a bit narrower. Again - i am not criticising, just commenting !

Well if that was the question, Autocar got it wrong!

If you check the 'Grey Book' (mentioned in threads a long long time ago) you will see that Skoda DO NOT regard the Superb 2 as a 'luxury car'.

They set out to provide a car with useful features and provide value for money.
