If you was to drive on a oval track with cruise control set at 146mph. How long would it be safe to drive at this speed before harming the engine.

What makes you think it would harm the engine?

Well if i was to drive a vRS octavia flat out, with the gas pedal full pressed and it reaches its potiential of 146mph, and stays at 146mph the engine is at its limit. If the engine is taken to the max, isnt there a risk of damaging the engine.

basically I just want to know the limits of the car as I want to take real good care of it when it arrives. And not to abuse it like I did with my capri.

Day tripper

Youd run out of gas before you harmed the engine!

Surely at Max quoted speed (146 mph) the engine is at its SAFE limit, and prevented from going any further by the Electronic Limiter ?

Therefore if it were possible to constantly drive at top speed the only damage would be to your wallet in fuel costs?? :D

146 isn't on the rev limiter in 5th IIRC. It's close though ;)

I love theoreticals!

In theory, my perfectly (motorsport) oiled, perfectly maintained, and sensibly cooled-down Impreza should not have self-destructed the lower half of its engine when I had it. But it did go splat grrr thwak thwak clatter clatter shoot me now master.

On a hot dry day I'd be worried at constant vMaxing or am I just used to living on the Banzai edge with Subaru ? I did renew the warranty a couple of weeks before though so saved heap big cash.

Hi Fabpreza,

You are a member of the Impreza-engine-in-pieces club as well are you?

I bought an STI-V Type-R when they came out in 99 - had it's 1000 mile service (to change to thicker oil). Opened it up at 3000 miles to - for the first and last time - lifted off the gas and ... BANG! knock-knock-knock-knock The big end had given up -pulled over immediately and the engine seized.

You had a type r sti??? and a mustang??? Someobody here is getting paid to much!

What do you prefer the impreza or the octavia. Also how many miles should I run in before I let the hammer down?

Hi Daytripper

The V-TypeR was fun while it lasted - it could out accelerate a Porsche upto a point.... but after it was rebuilt it was never the same... Mind you on my first run in it at SantaPod I pulled a 13.7 seconds 1/4 mile which i was pleased with! When I got rid of it I actually chopped it in for my dream car: an R33-GTR - which I reckon was the pinnicle of my car ownership - not bad for a 23 year old eh ;)

Anyway 4 years later and I'm still of the run-it-in-fast-school of thought. My dealer assured me that you dont have to bother running them in too rigidly, so I was giving it some welly after a few hundred miles - nothing too mental but exploring the full rev range shall we say ;) :drive:

I think that running a car in using the full rev range is probably better for it anyway (disclaimer: if you run yours in fast and it blows up don't blame me!)

:bttt:

Dave

Just a little addendum to that - I've have my Skod now for 16 months which is the longest i have ever kept a car for and I have no intention of selling it in the near future (i'm going to mod it first :vamperic: ).

I think that really says something for Skoda!

On the running in thing - in the brand new cars I've had, I've always been very sensible to 1000m and then drove them normally without bouncing off the rev limiter every gear change.

Its common-sense stuff really - like letting it idle for a minute before switching off. You COULD gradually up your own mental rev limit as the miles progress for peace of mind - say 5500rpm between 1000m and 2000m but I doubt you'd be able to resist!
