mondeo st220's anyone had one?

Featured Replies

ive got my eye on a 3.0 V6 mondeo st220, anyone know what running one is like? also life expectancy of the engine? the one im looking at has 72k on which is putting me off a bit.

Like with most cars, so long as it has a full service record there shouldn't be much of a problem with milage.

I ran a ST200 for 70k and just under 4 years. It was still sweet when I got rid so I am sure provided all the right boxes are ticked you will be fine..

a friend of mine had one, and he didn't look after it very well, but it still didn't give him any problems. He liked it.

200k+ on one of them. Sure you'll need a few sensors and things along the way, but they are a good engine. They don't have the appetite for big ends and headgaskets like the old 2.5V6 on which its based.

Generally a very reliable and well proved engine and should easily double that mileage without problem. I'd walk away if there's no service history though. Make sure if you're looking you get a late 53-plate onwards one which was when the Mk3.5 facelift took place and you'll get more kit and a nicer quality interior. Easiest way to tell is the outside will be adourned with chrome surrounds and the side repeaters will be clear rather than orange.

Other thing to check are the rear subframe bushes which are apparently prone to premature wear on the Mk3's and cost a few hundred to fix. Saying that I never had a problem with mine and I sold it at 5 years old and 87k miles.

As long as serviced well all should be ok for a durable V6, lots of grunt and a cracking price for a performance family car, if you are in the market for one you could do worse.....

I had one, but it had 2.500 miles on it, just ran in. Not a bad motor, did about 24mpg, price of parts was horrific £500 per headlight.

Overall. not a patch on my Octavia.

i had the ST TDCI 3 years back, and what a car. handled ike a dream, i still think it handled better than my vRS, the only problem i found was you were constantly changing gear to keep it shifting at a good rate.

whereas although i havent driven the st220,im sure that since the rev range is greater you wouldnt have that problem.

and another way to look at it, is the ST220 was quicker round a track than the focus ST supposably because of its balance.

buy one is my reccomendation. absolutely awesome cars. ford know ow to make an exciting car,

but i would say, that since its a large v6 make sure you have a good sevice history

Boss had a Derv estate ST. Had loads of MAF sensor issues, and spent 12 weeks at the dealers once.

Good job the ST220 isn't a Derv then  DMF issues and injector problems are both commonplace on the TDCI, plus silly gear ratios and the peakiest torque curve in the world to boot... still a nice car though.

Back onto the petrol... there is the odd lemon out there that has the potential to bankrupt you, but most are extremely reliable.

Hi

I've got one (as a second car) and it's great! It's only done 27K but I've been told that the engine is virtually indestructible. The car is a dream to drive and I get about 30 mpg from it. The interior is a bit cheap and tacky (my Octavia has a nicer interior), the Sony stereo has regular hiccups and the aftermarket parking sensors are a bit all or nothing but guess what? I don't care a jot! It is great to drive, the engine is so flexible it'll cruise in sixth gear at 30 MPH and really quite and comfortable. I always look forward to driving it, no matter what the weather or road conditions.

My only regret is buying it last August as it has lost about 50% of its value since!

Out of interest, what mk mondeo / octy are you talking about when you rate the octy interior as better quality?

My interpretation of the mk3 mondeo's interior is that it far surpasses the mk1 octy.

The Mondeo takes a lot of bashing for being dull as dishwater but if you ignore the inevitable bore of a low powered engine (in my case anyway!), the majority of them are solid motors. This perception that the interior fit and finish is below that of a Skoda just isn't right tbh.

I've got a MKIII (55 plate) ST220 and a MKII (07 plate) Octavia - the Skoda interior feels more classy than the ST220 and the interior is more stylishly designed. I also prefer the green instrument lighting in the Octavia and being short, I can at least extend the arm rest in the Skoda - the one in the ST is of no use to me as I have the driver's seat too far forward.

I used to have a 1996 MKII Mondeo (which I sold to my brother who is replacing it with a MKIII soon) and reckon the interior was better than in the MKIII - I'll ask my brother what he thinks when he gets his.

I quite agree that the Mondeo gets an unfair bashing - the MKII I had was the best handling car I've ever driven up to getting the ST220 - the Octavia comes a close second.

You used to have to replace the whole subframe, but Ford later caved and release a bush+inserter tool pack that worked out a hell of a lot cheaper.

In general, stunning cars - probably the best handling of its type, and great looking too :)
