That oil at the top of the bore will be un swept by the piston rings, nothing to worry about :)

I watch with interest, as my son would like to embark on a similar project :)

i have to say the golf mk2 is by far my favourite car to be doing as a project

when you consider the whole front end bolts off and engine can come out in say 3-4 hours if you havn't done one before makes life easier

and i hate vauxhall corsa's/nova's with a burning passion.

:)

Good man :)

seconded, it's just from where the gases/fuel flow round the valves, it bakes it onto the side of the bore, the piston ring doesn't come up that far...

cheers, the engine wont be back together for a couple of weeks im working 7 days a week again at the moment :| shocking really when i had a letter at christmas saying we where all on 3 days a week and i had a second written warning!

painting the block next though

i thought you were going for a 2.0? the engine in that pic is a 1.3

yeah i know :(

money became a problem when the misses rover blew up, i did the head gasket then probarbly 15 mins later the oil pump failed and engine seized solid

replaced the engine and head gasket went

fixed again for now.. but god only knows how long the hatefull thing will last

if i go with this for now for the sake of a practice replacing the valves in the head and having a go at porting and polishing (i know the difference will be naff on this engine like i say its just to have a go) then when money builds back up il get me a vr6 and go all out on it properly

im still doing brakes, suspension, the works and il powder coat the subframe and various bits

its not going to be a racecar after all, its intended to be a show car :)

dont worry too much about it being a tarmac tearing monster, think of it as being a learning experience:)

edit: i've got a brand new cylinder head gasket that will fit that engine still sealed up in it's packet sat in my garage if you want it

Hopefully as long as you need it to...

a job came in today back fromt he machinists so i thought i would take advantage of the fact that the head gasket had gone and thought i would chack the head for any warp

check it corner to corner with a machined straight edge afterwords aswelland looks perfect to me (y)

somehow though i just uploaded the pictures on the computer and lost all the ones with the straight edge :S

never mind. picture quality is a bit poo!

cant realy make out that last picture, but you get the drift :) not really something that needed to be done i dont think but thought i would look anyways (Y)

those oldies dont tend to warp too bad anyway, the gaskets on those are normally those old compressed fibre type and they just get eaten away by coolant, but if you have access to a surface grinder it's worth doing it, but you will have to take the valves out

dont have any access to any lathes, surface grinders or any specialist tools tbh, we are just a fab' shop

i do however have access to a profiler, but its oxy acetalyne so only any good for mild steel

ready for spraying also now.

Edit: anyone interested, i got the dremmel/drimmle whatever it is and put on a 240 grit flap disk wheel as small as i could find for the little corners best i could, the rest i got with thinners and wire wool (not shown in pictures as i forgot to take them).

looks bad at work now so i might not have any updates for a fair while..

2 blokes been laid off and 1 on short time. and theres only 4 of us in the workshop im the only one left :(, the rest all work on site. im allready on my second warning so i booked up my ideas and am hoping for the best!

hopefully updates soon.
