'Steering rack play' raised at service

Featured Replies

Just had a minor service on the RS and a bit of diagnostic stuff to try to work out what's going on with the throttle body (http://briskoda.net/diagnostics-vag-com/how-implausible-implausible/129308/) and they flagged up some non-serious play on the steering rack which I can't feel. The quote is for the replacement of the inner steering rack joints (presumably other end of the track rod arms) and comes to £367 for parts and labour. Does that sound even vaguely normal? Seems pretty excessive to me.

As for the throttle body, no joy. They said it appeared to be unadapted and had no readiness code (whatever that is) and so have done that - I just have to hope that their version of that covers something different to the times I've had it done before.

The arms are about £142 a pair I guess the labour is about 2 hours tops, so yes they are having a laugh imo.

Is that at a main dealer, if so then it's probably about right.

It is a main dealer, yeah. I can't see any reason to get that particular job done there though and it's not serious - I can't actually feel any play at all and it doesn't show through the handling - so I'll give it some time and see what happens closer to the MOT.

Cheers :)
