Problem with MFD2

Featured Replies

I recently bought a 2nd hand MFD2 (nexus) off evil-bay and installed using the information on this forum. Thanks for that really useful especially when it cam to rewiring my I-Pod (Aux) interface. I have also followed the instructions when it comes to calibration the unit. However, everytime I get in the car the NAV system seem to take 15 to 20 m inutes to start up. During this time it reloads the Nav program once if not two or three times. once loaded and the Nav system is up and running it need calibrating again. Is there something wrong with my MFD2, or something wrong with the map cd, is this just the way the MFD works? If so it is unusable!

I did try a third party unit before trying the MFD2. Great little unit with touch screen, bluetooth, navicatino, etc. Only 3 things I could get on with were

1.The fact that it displayed a VW logo and all button illumiated in red

2. My CD changer would not work with the unit dispite the fact that the unit had a cd changer interface.

3. The IPod user interface was total pants. Why you had to drive the IPod through the touch screen when the IPod has a perfectly usable GUI is beyond me.

At the moment I can't decide whether to stick with the MFD2 (if the nav can be sorted) or go back to the previous head unit (bit like the columbus) but suffer the naff IPod user interface.

Could well be an issue with the disk.

I had similar trouble with mine, it would display the message 'navigation system is being activated' or similar, it would also appear to 'crash' by going from the map back to the Skoda splash screen. You could also hear the unit going nuts trying to read the disc.

I found the solution was to clean the laser lens in the unit. On top of the MFD2 there are a number of slots, shine a good torch in the slots until you spot the lens (not easy to find - be patient) and give it good clean with a cotton bud and some alcohol or lens cleaner and see if thats helps. The lens gets coated with the same film of crud you get on the inside of the windscreen from time to time.

If you don't fancy taking the unit out of the dashboard again, couldn't you just use one of those eyelashes on a disk cleaning CDs?

I tried one of those and it didn't do much good. The film that builds up is quite resistant and needs something alcohol based to shift it.

Besides, the MFD2 is a doddle to remove.

I thought you could put a drop of IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) on the eyelashes (I do this on a cotton bud usually, but only if it is easy access) - I think there may be a version of the cleaning CD that actually has a foam sponge section just for that purpose.

The MFD2 is relatively easy to remove and refit (I upgraded from Stream MP3), but you do have to remove trim carefully, undo screws and carefully pull out or push back in and fiddle with wires etc etc, so it is a bit annoying to do. And that's before you poke things in it!
