1.4 vw tsi engine in skoda felicia

Featured Replies

it may be redicioules ..but i have a project for my felicia 1997 to install a 1.4 vwtsi engine on it...its a 140 hp engine and 200nm torque... i just want to know if the chase of the car can handle that engine or not...please reply ..i need any available help..

thanks

No reason why it wont handle it.

anything is possible, it won't be easy but it will go in there

Then when you've finished yours you can do mine!!

Hehe.

Go for it mate... there will no doubt be lots of headaches and bleeding knuckes but it will be worth it in the end!!

Aren't you better off just lumping an old 2.0 16v engine out of the MK3 GTi or the Ibiza 16v?

Similar performance and it will be a whole lot cheaper, you can buy a whole MK3 GTi with sensible miles for probably the same money as you'll find a 1.4TDi engine for.

In either case good luck and keep us posted!

lol i think fitting a 1.4tsi will be easyer than a 2.0 16v. and a dam sight lighter to.

The old 2.0 16v ABF engine will pretty go straight in using Golf mounts and you can use Golf driveshafts from the GTi plus the 1.4TSi is drive by wire and will need a lot more wiring and I imagine will have to use different mounts.

The 2.0 is a more driveable engine than the 1.4TSi anyway, the older 16v unit can be tuned with ease to 160-170bhp without using a ridiculous cam so it'll still have plenty of torque low down.

Also the gearbox that comes on the 2.0 GTi is easy AFAIK to fit on the Felicia, the mounts are slightly different but it can be made to fix very easily where as the 6 speed gearbox out of the later models is different and would probably be a bigger job to get to fit.

As I mentioned previously the difference in cost will be huge which would put me off putting a 1.4TSi engine in it. I'd be happy to throw the money to put a 2.0 16v or maybe even a 2.8 V6 in a Felicia but not a 1.4TSi

My thought exactly... he obviously hasn't seen your engine conversion thread! hehe

i must admit i've not ever seen a 1.4tsi unit before, but i'm pretty certain the actual engine block is very similar to the lupo gti lump. they have chain driven cams on the tsi don't they?? ross??

i think the biggest headache with that engine would be finding somewhere to put the intercoolers, plus you would need to use the tsi ecu too, with stratified injection it's not just the pulse width of the injector you have to worry about, also the exact timing of the injection cycle is critical to the stratified charge being in the right place at the right time which means most of your aftermarket ecu's would be out, that said, the emerald k3 can do some clever stuff with injection timing but afaik you can't do it in 3 dimensions (ie rpm x load), the best bet would be to get the oe ecu decoded so that it would run without the transponder module, then do a cut 'n' shut on the tsi loom to get it to work with the felicia loom...

it's going to be quite an expensive project, ideally you'd use the 1.4tsi gearbox too, which means you will need to either fabricate custom engine mountings all round, or use the original mountings that come with the engine/gearbox and modify the chassis to accept them, next issue would be driveshafts, for a engine with that sort of output i would think about using the matching shafts that came with the gearbox, the felicia shafts are a bit flimsy and wouldn't last long. the skoda hubs have 22mm splines, but iirc the late vw stuff has 26mm splines so the vw shafts wont fit the hubs, also they won't be the right length. need i go on??

i think possibly the best bet would be to find an old mk3 golf on the scraphead and take it's subframe, track control arms, hubs, brakes etc, and then modify that to fit the bottom of the felicia... this solves a lot of issues in one hit, firstly it gives you somewhere to mount the back of the engine/gearbox, plus becuase you are using vw hubs/arms, you could use standard vw shafts (poss from a mk4 1.8T??) and they will be the right length. also you would be able to use mk3 golf front suspension using the felicia top mountings.. and lastly having vw hubs opens up a lot more choices for upgraded brakes..

only other thing you would need to do is make/bodge/modify a front cross member to accept the front engine mount from the mk3 setup...

then you could take the twin cable gear linkage from a 6n2 polo or mk4 golf, and slap that in place, you would only need to drill 4 holes in the chassis around the gear lever apperture to make it fit, and the cable change system is more reliable than the shaft system..

next problem would be the clutch, most (all?) late vw gearboxes use hydraulic clutch, felicia uses a cable operated clutch, you could swap out the pedal assembly (which might mean you'd need to change the brake master cylinder/servo too) or if you put a bit of thought into it you can convert a hydraulic clutch system so that it can be operated by cable.

then all you need is to quickly rustle up a custom exhaust downpipe and you are away :D

using this setup would mean you could use virtually any vw engine you want using oe mountings or off the shelf parts.. bare in mind that the 2.0-16v ABF engine is quite a tall engine by the time you've put the intake manifolds on and i doubt it would fit under the bonnet, but i could be wrong.. tbh, if i was to go to all this trouble, i would use a 20v unit, reliable, plentiful, and highly tunable, and above all, it would be easier to wire up.

i don't want to discourage you, but if you have your heart set on a tsi engine, don't bother doing it in a felicia, go and find a cheap seat arosa/vw lupo to play with, it would be a far easier transplant

Yes the 1.4 TSi is chain driven. Not much in common with the 1.4 16v lump if anything.

The 1.4 turbo would be a nice install, has its own built in charge cooler, but as the engine is new its not likely to be cheap.
