405Nm from the factory?

Featured Replies

Hello all, i wonder whether anyone can help with this or has had a similar problem.

Just had My 07 plate VRS diesel in at the local dealer to have the DMF replaced as i had noticed a grumbling sort of noise that popped up over christmas coming from the engine at a certain rev point (about 1200-1500 revs) and after checks the dealer concluded that this was the cause.

He has replaced the DMF (which turned out to be 'very slack') and after giving it a road test the noise was still there. He has basically found that this noise is coming from the turbo wastegate sticking and after running some diagnostics on his computer has found that the car is putting out 405.3Nm instead of the factory 350Nm and this increased pressure is causing this problem. He won't fix this under any sort of warranty because the computer is telling him that it has been chipped when i haven't done this.

I am not sure where to go from here and was wondering whether anyone else has had a similar experience.

I bought the car brand new from the Skoda main dealer in Peterborough and since then i have only ever had it in at the main dealer in preston for its first service, the recall for the DPF problem and for this issue so i don't know how this could have happened.

Going to get in touch with the dealer at peterborough about it tomorrow but can't see myself getting any answers from there. Any help would be appreciated.

Some dealers remap cars for customers or as demo's.

I assume we are talking Wings?

They DO remap cars for customers.

Yes we are.

I didn't ask for it to be done and there was no indication given to me that it had been. It's a bit out of order if they have done this to show another customer before i picked the car up.

I will contact them tomorrow any way and ask the question.

Thanks for your help.

Perhaps you might wish to have it rolling road tested beforehand, these are not always 10% accurate but will be enough to indicate if it has be done or not.

Sounds like a bonus situation to me. Shame dual-mass flywheels suck ***.

IIRC the vRS PD TDI has variable vanes (rather than a wastegate) to control power output. If the vanes are stuck in the "low revs" position it should go into limp-home mode (very reduced power to protect the engine) when there is excessive boost, not produce excessive power. That will be why the dealer is insisting it has been remapped (chipped).

Is there anyway someone could have installed a performance re-map without you personally knowing (eg a relative had the car for a day and decided to get a trial remap installed) ?

If not, then I would take the line that you purchased the car brand new, you have never authorised a remap, therefore the car is exactly as they sold it to you (including the boost fault, whether it be due to a remap or a mechanical/electrical fault), therefore they are responsible for fixing both the original problem (excessive boost), plus the consequential damage (clutch and flywheel) .

If the dealer won't help then I guess the next step is to take it up with Skoda UK.

Let us know how you get on, this is an intriguing one.

Been in touch with Wings who say they didn't do it and that they stopped doing chip tuning in 2006.

Looks like next stop is Skoda UK, i will keep you informed as to what happens.

As an aside, the guys in preston told me that if it was detuned back to factory settings then this would solve the sticking wastegate, is this the case? Also what kind of costs would i be looking at if the worst came to the worst and i have to stump up for it myself?

Perhaps you should ask Wings to carry out the warranty repairs and to ensure that the car that you purchased in good faith from them is using factory software.

Well, Skoda UK's input on this was 'It wasn't like that when it left the factory so we can't do anything' So it looks as though i am on my own which i am fairly livid about.

I don't know anything about the tuning process but most seem to be an engine remap. If this was the case would there be some sort of date stamp as to when the modified software was installed or if it is a physical chip would this be traceable in any way? i only ask this as i want to try to get some sort of proof together of what has happened when.

In the meantime does anyone know a good tuning company in the Northwest who i can contact so that i can get this looked at and removed if possible?

Thanks.

I would go back to Skoda UK. Explain the situation again and ask if they will authorize the local dealer to upload the original software into the ECU as a goodwill gesture.

You might be able to get somone to read the ECU and identify the software, one you have that it may then be possible to approach the vendor and ask if they have records relating to your car.

Perhaps Will @ P Torque could help.

Why not go back to Wings?

What did the dealer use to establish the 405.3Nm of torque. Before doing anything why not get a Rolling road printout and establish if indeed anything is out of the ordinary. Armed with this printout, assuming its around normal you could then approach skoda uk with your proof.

This is the printout from simpsons....

Going to try to investigate further tomorrow.

Thanks for your help guys.

Hmm, that's quite interesting isn't it.

Ok, looking at the VCDS Label file it does in fact have such a function for MBV 08-

008,0,Injection Quantity Limitation I (Torque Limitation)

008,1,Engine Speed,(G28),Specification (Idle): 810...940 RPM\nSpecification (Full Load): 2800...3200 RPM

008,2,Torque Request,(Driver),Specification (Idle): -5.0...0.0 Nm\nSpecification (Full Load): 350.0...420.0 Nm

008,3,Torque Limitation,,Specification (Idle): 100.0...200.0 Nm\nSpecification (Full Load): 350.0...420.0 Nm

008,4,Smoke Limitation,,Specification (Idle): 100.0...200.0 Nm\nSpecification (Full Load): 350.0...420.0 Nm

I'd be interested to know how this measurement shapes up to a RR test.

Bit of a daft question as the DPF has been changed; but has the car had the 26E6 campaign Remap and Exhaust gas pressure sensor upgrade done?

If this is done (if it hasn't been already) it will overwrite any remap that has been programmed (if its there as alleged); then the dealer could run their diagnostics again.

I'd never knock a strong and healthy 'stock' engine but 405Nm is very much in the remap territory.

Yes, this was done just after christmas at simpsons. Tbh this is the first thing i thought of when they mentioned the problem with tuning/remap as this was the only thing i have had done that has tinkered in that area. I got told that the 26E6 will not have had any effect on this issue by simpsons so assumed that it only rewrote a portion of engine map. As an aside, the noise i am hearing (turbo wastegate sticking) that kicked all of this off started before the 26E6 was done.

I am going to have to get some testing done by an independant i think as has been suggested by others.

Wouldnt it be worth informing your insurance? Big or small Im sure if there was a prolem surely you could be liable? Authorised or not, you cant really claim ignorance that you didnt know anymore, as you do and skoda as well as third parties know you do.

Why not take it back to Wings for repair? Or am I missing something here?

Surely someone can take a copy of the file and compare it too standard can't they, this sounds like The dealer or SUK should be looking into this and not you.

The problem is the OP is initially going to have to try and prove it was done whilst he owned the car, quite difficult I would imagine.

I'm not sure how accurate that test is, I'd like to have a go myself.

I agree with Stu.

If you have a remapped car sold to you as standard there are two issues:

1) you were mis sold the car and can return it

2) you need to tell your insurance it's been mapped if it has.
